ALMOST BACK TO NORMAL

First of all, thanks to everyone who extended well wishes to me while I was dealing with the upheaval of my son’s accident and his healing process. Working where I do, and with all that I have seen, I know how lucky he was. J has done really well and is now back in Waimanalo with his 2nd family. (He practically kissed the ground we got him home) He went back to work this past Monday, with a 20 lb lifting limit for his right arm, and that has gone well. The big one for him is his jaw is no longer wired shut! The day the wires came off, I took him to The Original Pancake House for brunch, since the oral surgeon said soft foods only. He got an order of Poi Pancakes with Lilikoi Butter. The look on his face when he took his first bite was so classic! He said as much as he loves Jamba Juice, it is going to be a while before he actually looks forward to having a smoothie.

I haven’t gotten on the scale yet, this month. I know it the numbers have gone the wrong way, and I just don’t want to have the proof right before my eyes. It’s time to start focusing on me and making the commitment to exercise again. Now that I won’t be spending hours on the bus getting to and from appointments 2-3 times a week, I can focus on spending that time on my health.

I need to work on a “winter” routine. I know, Hawaii, no snow or cold, what do I mean by winter? Well, my weekend-after work bike rides are greatly altered. Those were my “big” cardio sessions, and I love it, but it gets dark too early for me to go the whole distance. It just isn’t safe. I can go half the distance, but it just isn’t the same. The other issue is there are more rainy days than not. I prefer to do my cardio outside; biking, walking/jogging, or walking in the sand. I do have DVDs by Leslie Sansone and Sparkpeople, but it is harder to motivate myself when I just want to curl up on the couch and listen to the rain.

I also need to get back into the habit of tracking diligently!! I have been stress eating and I haven’t wanted to face the truth; even “healthy” food will make you gain weight if you eat too much. One nice thing; I got a NutriBullet blender to prepare things for J to “eat” while his jaw was wired shut. I have started making freggie smoothies in the morning. I follow the “formula” that the company promotes; 1/2 leafy greens plus 1/2 fruits. I use baby spinach and a combination of whatever fruits I may have on hand and water. I end up with a 12-16 oz drink that has 2 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits. I always feel like I am not getting enough, so this is a great way to add more to my menu. I don’t usually care for “drinking” my meals, but I am finding this pretty satisfying, plus it is so easy in comparison to using a traditional blender.

I am leaning towards doing the Great Aloha Run this February. I am hoping that it will help me stay motivated with my exercise. I am just not looking forward to the possibility of losing my toenails, again! Payday is next Friday, so I will probably send my entry in then.

    Glad you son is doing much better. I'm sure that was incredibly scary for you! I have no doubt that you will be back on track in no time!

    Such great news about your son! I'm so glad to hear he's doing well and getting back to "normal".

I hear you about the bumps in the road. I've gotten off track too. I do enjoy my Zumba class, so as long as my schedule allows, I do make it to that class. But I've been making poor choices for food.

Here's to getting back on road to success!

SO GLAD your son is pretty much "back to normal" and that his progress was so positive, although that time was tough on you as a mom!!
Congratulations on a job well-done, and as you re-focus back on yourself, know that your sacrifices for your precious child are honored and celebrated!!
Loved the descriptions of him almost kissing the ground and enjoying his pancake meal!

    Red Tea is also called Rooibos and its quite good for you. I love it a lot. I can usually get 3 infusions out of one tea bag, each cup tasting as good as the first which is rare for me. I do like Black then Green Teas. Pretty much all tea is good for you. A lot of the reds are herbal in nature indeed.

Glad your son is on the mend. I used to live on Oahu for a few years back in the 90's I miss the weather, food, people, beaches even if I am a ginger lol. Here in Vegas we have Hawaiian food and I partake of it sometimes.
I was having trouble with my allergies and sinuses just right after Labor Day so I had to do my exercise exclusively inside. I'm just now able to get back outside without feeling horrible when I came back in which is nice. Its my first full year in Vegas so its an adjustment in terms of the pollen and stuff that causes my allergies to go crazy in fall. Tea helps that a lot.

The nicest thing in terms of exercise in fall and winter is that you don't feel like you are starting from square one when the weather stays nicer and gets darker later in spring. Personal safety has to come first though right? Just do what you can so you can get back to where you were.

    Have you thought about joining a gym to use, especially during the winter months? Or maybe a bike stand so you could ride your bike inside?? I'm glad your routine will be returning back to the regular, and am glad to know your son is well on the road to wellness!

    I know you've just been through a terribly stressful time! You put your focus exactly where it needed to be right then. And you're absolutely right - NOW it's time for you to focus on taking care of YOU! Sounds like you've got a great plan; know there are lots of us right alongside you, cheering you on!
