8. Have you ever worked with a physical trainer? One on one? Small group? What skills or talents did the trainer have that helped you? What didn't help?

I have rather minimal experience with trainers. There must have been a forgettable one when I first joined the health club, who showed me the available apparatus and how to use some of it. My next brush with a personal trainer was when I signed up for a fitness assessment that the club provides annually. That was a disaster. Not the assessment, but the interaction with the trainer administering it. He was young; he was male; he was clueless about how the aging female body works (or doesn't). I got through it without injury, but the experience put a big damper on any enthusiasm I might have had for hiring personal training through the health club.

I do intend to hire a personal trainer after the first of the year to help me work on upper body strength and balance, but it will be someone I already know; someone I have already had discussions with, someone who understands my desire to improve, but not at the expense of joint damage or other injury that would keep me from doing what I love--teaching in the water.
