OK what is with all the naked people at the gym??

Thursday, November 07, 2013

I have been on vacation from work this week, doing a stay-cation, which has been really great. Furthermore, I have been able to go the gym in the middle of the day, when less people are there, and really get nice long workouts in which also has been super great. (Usually I have to workout at the end of the day, after I finish working -- and oftentimes by then, my motivation really starts to drop off, especially now that it's getting dark earlier.)

So this has been great. But there's been one little oddity that I've begun to notice at my gym that seems to happen during the day, that isn't really such an issue after work or in the early evening...

Every single time that I walk into the women's changing room -- there are naked people (women) everywhere. All different shapes and sizes and seemingly no modesty issues whatsoever. I feel like I'm in some twilight zone episode where I am seemingly the only person in the women's changing room actually wearing any clothes.

emoticon

Now I don't really think of myself as a full-on prude, or overly conservative, but the last thing that I really want to see before or after a workout, is full frontal nudity while said individual is brushing their hair, or checking their email on their smart phone. Is it too much to ask that you just turn around and face the lockers? This way I'm only assaulted with some pale buttocks which isn't quite as shocking. And as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't matter if you are a "good-looking" naked person, or a "not-so-good-looking" naked person. You are still NAKED.

Whenever I need to change at the gym, and I always need to change there when I am normally working during the week and heading there afterwards. After checking in and finding an open locker to use, and lugging my giant pink (fun!) workout gym bag with me stuffed full of my workout clothes, I opt for the partial nudity technique. Unfamiliar with this technique? Let me explain:

1) Get gym clothes ready for easy grab.
2) Remove shoes, earrings, any odd hair things going on.
3) Place hair in pony tail (now I use a barrette as I chopped it all off).
4) Remove clothes from lower body and grab lower body workout clothes. Put on.
(this is why it's called partial nudity technique -- only half of you is naked at any given time)
5) Fold and place work clothes into gym bag on top of work shoes.
6) Remove upper body clothes and get sports bra in easy grabbing distance.
7) Do the quick switcheroo, and remove underthings on the top half of body, and replace with sportsbra (all while facing locker is a good choice).
8) Put on sports top.
9) Fold remaining work clothes and place into bag.
emoticon

Now granted, SOME of the naked people I see in the locker room in the middle of the day might be coming back from getting showered. And the gym towels aren't especially generous. So, to help those suffering from complete and total lack of body modesty issues, you CAN keep the towel partly on your shoulders while you quickly get dressed. Starting with the bottom half and working upwards works pretty well. Just saying.

Hopefully I haven't terribly offended anyone, as this is mostly in just good fun -- but do you really need to be fully unclothed to then decide to check your email or text messages?

Have a sparky-day!

emoticon I am totally with you on this one.

Checking emails nude, huh? A lot of gyms don't allow you to take out your phones in the locker room anymore due to privacy issues and some people taking pictures.

I believe the body is a beautiful thing, but there is also nothing wrong with a little modesty, as well. emoticon

Thanks for the laugh and for the blog!

There was a little bit of this going on at the gym I went to when I was young. Mostly it was a female dominance thing going on. (I thought.) A lot of sweet young things strutting their stuff for each other, frequently competing for the same male attention. I always thought it was a, "You ain't woman enough to take my man," kind of thing going on. Yes, the gym towels are skimpy.

I agree with you 100%. There is a modicum of modesty that should be observed in the locker room. I dress for swimming in the bathroom stall, then I go into the locker room. Showering afterward I do have to walk into the locker room. I thought it was interesting we both have big, stuffed gym bags. Mine is not pink. emoticon

Land's End has these HUGE towels called bath sheets. They have awesome coverage. Even at my heaviest they wrapped all the way around me, and they cover you from boobs to about 4 inches above your knees. That's what I use instead of the gym's towels. I'm not even sure the Ash Center has a towel service...

I'm not sure if same issue happens here in my country but if it's me, I will probably not using the locker room anymore, that sounds like a R-rated horror movie, haha.

By the way, don't they have changing room or somewhere you can change your clothes hidden from others?

I'm in Italy too and, like STRONG_SARAH said, there is NO modesty among any of the gals in the locker room here. They'll have full on conversations for ten minutes with each other, dry their hair and do just about anything-all totally in the buff! And some will even shower without drawing the curtain. Talk about an eyeful! I never know what's going to hit me when I walk through the door! I'm no prude either, but after seven years here, I'm still not used to it. And I'm with you--a little flash of skin is fine, but it's a locker room, not a nudist colony, lol!

Wow - what kind of gym do you go to? Knock on the door, someone opens a small slit - "what's the password?" "Er, intensity?" "Close enough" Let's you in - naked treadmill? "Noooo!"

I would always take my clothes to the shower area, and bring my own big towel from home. I'd either change in the shower stall (water off, of course), or, if someone was waiting, I'd wrap myself in my big towel and go into a bathroom stall. Checking Email nekked? Jeesh!

Things like this is why I go to my gym at 3am in the morning when there are at most 2 other people that... I may work in the medical field and see all sorts of body parts but I would rather not see it when trying to work out... Even when I go during the day I will exercise in jeans or my scrubs before I would change in front of anyone! That has been true even when I was a good weight!

While I don't lounge around nude at gyms, I am not at all worried about naked bodies, being an old ex hippie type... it would only bother me if they don't sit on towels in the sauna.

Gym fungus and other creepy crawlies, now THAT freaks me out.

Its the worst when one of your clients from work also goes to your gym & talks to you while naked....speaking of awkward. Loved this blog. I'm not a prude or modest either really but don't feel the need to be so open in public. Its a gym, not an exhibition.

HaHa I completely agree with you. When I was on swim team I learned how to change both into and out of my swimsuit without being naked at all. It really is easy and then no worries about people seeing me naked! :)

lol! I loved this, so much. Put such a huge smile on my face. I thought guys were bad, but sounds like the girls at your gym could give them a run for their money. :-D Your method is pretty much bang on with mine.

Well over here in Norway, people are just naked in the locker rooms too. The kids start with it being just normal when they are little and then in school they shower after gym in grade school and then on it goes. I do understand but I think it is an American cultural thing...not wanting to be naked in the locker room. Thank you for a good chuckle!

This cracked me up. I can relate. It embarrasses me to see naked women at the gym no matter how big or small they are, and there is no way I'll ever be one of them. All about modesty here.

I remember being HORRIFIED at my first health club experience when I was a teenager, at all of the naked bodies. Had they no modesty?!?!

And I freaked my niece out completely by being the only person in the sauna in a swimsuit, a few years ago... she just didn't understand...

But working at the gym now, and as I become more comfortable with my body in all of its lumpiness and weirdness, I'm realizing that it's ME who has the problem. Nudity is not something to be ashamed of emoticon

In Italy they have no modesty! In the gym locker room they walk from the shower to the locker with no clothes and take their time getting dressed while having conversations with their naked neighbors. It's insane!

WHOA there Nelliiiiieeeeeee. This is like a car wreck. I GOTta put the brakes on and do a rubberneck with a title like that!

LOL! I actually was assuming far worse and imagining shweddy cheeks on the equipment. emoticon

I'm glad it was limited to the locker room.

And for the record, I would do the partial nudity thing too. emoticon

I experienced this a few years ago when switching to a YMCA with a pool. Not just walking around buck naked, but no towel in the sauna. It was quite a shock, but I did get used to it.

Ah, the partial nudity technique....if only everyone would use it. emoticon I'm fortunate that my gym is small enough that there are only 2 showers and they are individual, lockable rooms....I'm also fortunate enough that I can go at a time when it isn't very busy.

I used to go to a public pool that was like this--everybody naked except me.

It actually made me feel pretty good about myself. I realized that the average woman my age looks WAY worse than I do!

I so agree! I love my gym - it is small, with executive washrooms - so you can be naked all by yourself. Whenever I'm stuck changing in a shared locker room I definitely opt for the partial nudity approach. It always amazes me that everyone doesn't!
