Laurie, the kids were on what looked like either insulation or thick styrofoam - and pretty close to shore. They both could reach the bottom with their sticks to push themselves around. So they weren't far away at all.
People on these islands learn to be very comfortable in the water, for swimming, diving, fishing, boating are all part of their lives. We saw two girls, maybe ages 6 and 8, teaching their little brother (maybe 3 or 4?) how to dive off the rocks. Really. It made me a little nervous, but this is life in the Solomons. (And the girls were making sure he always climbed out in front of them.) 966 days ago
Wow! The pictures you took (last 3 blogs) are wonderful and I love the sculptures and the idea of lazing around on a beach eating coconut, pineapple and bananas... but I don't think I'd want to be stranded there longer than a couple weeks! Yikes! 966 days ago
I'm terrified for the child! What is he sitting on? A raft? Styrofoam? A cushion on rocks? How far from land is he? A storm or worse could come up with no warning. If I were there I'd have to grab him or look the other way. 966 days ago
