My Dad's Second Stroke

Sunday, November 03, 2013

My dad had his second stroke on Thursday night. It was mighty scary, but not because it was Halloween. He can talk a little, but can't walk or eat yet. Each day, we're hoping for a little more improvement, but the doctors and nurses tell us to be patient.

The neurologist showed my sister and me Dad's brain MRI (or CAT scan?), and it was quite sobering to be able to see not only the stroke hotspots, but also the signs of vascular damage and brain shrinkage. We're all so worried, but also talking about how we can take better care of ourselves.

I'm thankful to be gaining an extra hour of rest tonight with DST ending. I'll miss the extra daylight, but I'm happy about that extra hour!

When the doc showed me my husband's MRI after his stroke 3 years ago, we were shocked to see that it was actually his second stroke, and that the first one had been bigger. I actually watched him having that first stroke, but he wouldn't let me take him to the doc, said he was just sleep walking (which he'd never done in his life). Then that headache 9 months later that turned out to be his third stroke. There is no quibbling with an MRI: it's right there for all to see.
