Marathons

Saturday, November 02, 2013

My son and some of his friends are in New York City today to run the ING New York marathon. This will be the second time he ran this race, although he was there last year when it was cancelled because of the devastating storm. He has also run the Chicago Marathon several times as well as a number of races in the Maritime provinces.

My son started doing triathlons in his 30's, shortly after he moved back to Nova Scotia from New Jersey when his engagement ended. After several triathlons, he realized that the running segment was his favourite, so he joined The Running Room and started training seriously for a half-marathon.

Running has been so good for him. He has a very demanding job and he needs something to get him outside and meeting people who are not related this work. I went to Halifax for his 40th birthday and met some of his running friends then. Many of these people were also at his wedding two years ago. They run, in small groups, probably 4 or 5 days/week, and have a running coach who prepares them for marathons. Did you know that there is very specific training based on which marathon you are running?

His sister from Amsterdam, who works for ING, has taken vacation days to be with him in New York. She has done this for 3 consecutive years. Someday, when he isn't teaching the first semester, he hopes to run the Amsterdam marathon.

I know that he loves running. It's a big part of his life. My only fear is that someone will decide that the NY marathon is a target for terrorism in the same way as someone did in Boston. If you are a praying person, please say a little prayer that the race will be completed safely.

Thanks,
Gail emoticon

  Hi Gail.........
I will definitely keep your son in my prayers today. Isn't it a shame that such a wonderful event has to be clouded by the thought of terrorism?!?!? And, how wonderful that your daughter comes over to the States to be with him. They must have a very close relationship. A friend of mine runs in the Boston Marathon every year and wasn't far from the explosions last year. He also has a very high stress job and running has definitely saved him by providing an outlet.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

That is great that your kids are interested in running! My youngest sister and my brother ran the Peachtree Road Race 10K for many years on the 4th of July. Now that they are in their fifties they have hung up their running shoes in favor of other pursuits. I have never been able to run, even as a child. I'm a persistent walker though!

Hugs and prayers for a safe marathon.

My Mom was a runner. Perhaps had I lived with her more often in my childhood I might have aspired to do it. I like walking and I used to throw the javelin and discus.
It is nice that you son and daughter are so supportive of one another. Well done.

I do pray that all faiths could worship a peace loving GOD. And, that their leaders would be peace loving people also. The acts of war on non-combatants can only be forgiven by a Loving peaceful GOD and will never be rewarded by that GOD. That is my humble (?) unbiased (?) opinion.
My prayers go out for the safety of all Non-Combatants everywhere from the perpetrators of "Acts of War".
Love and Hugs, Audra
