Another month-end

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Month-end was a very mixed bag in my office today. We're having "issues" with the bank our payments go to and I ended up having to post this week's $54,000 state Medicaid payments by hand. The print is tiny and it's easy to get confused, but I finally got it worked out. Then I had to call the administrators of the Medicare website. I spent twenty minutes being transferred hither and yon, only to be told at last, "we're not accustomed to providers getting EOBs (Explanation of Benefits) from our website. You don't have clearance for that." (We got ALL of our EOBs from the old administrators). The bank is also messing up with our Medicare checks so that they're next to impossible to get the details to post. This isn't as big a deal in Pediatrics where I work (though we do have some), but in the other departments it's turning into a major migraine.

I got up at 5:30 this morning to bake a cake for the office Halloween party. Memo to self: cake mix cakes don't like streusel topping. It came out looking a bit like a lunar landscape. I told everybody it was a Haunted Wasteland cake. But hey, they ate it! And my boss kicked all of us out an hour early -- seriously not complaining!

I'm looking into some cast iron cookware. I saw a three-skillet set on for $27, but at that price I'm really leery of the quality. I think that one at a time over the next three months I'm going to get the 10 and 12 inch skillets and Dutch oven from the Bobby Flay collection at Kohl's. Odd they don't have an 8 inch skillet; have to get that somewhere else, I suppose. I might also check thrift stores. I learned the hard way that you should never buy nonstick at the thrift store, but I suspect cast iron can be "nursed back to health."

Time to fix some dinner and do some knitting. I'm making a sky-blue lace stole, and I love the yarn. It's a mix of wool and rayon, and it's SO soft! I've been knitting for over 40 years but I'm just starting to do lace.

I also seriously need some sleep...

We use a lot of the enamel-coated cast iron, and it's just wonderful. I do like the traditional cast iron, but I always have issues with the seasoning. Probably not doing it right, so I should really try it again. It is great stuff.

I've had great experience with thrift store and yard sale cast iron cookware! I just had to invest the time to reseason it -- well worth the effort.

I wish you all the best in November!
