It Takes Me Back

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

I found the 20 minute eating challenge just that .....a challenge! It is an alien concept almost. But I tried....Not enough food to make it last so I had to change my menu. Then I needed to add more water to the meal. I ended up drinking 6 glasses of water. That still didn't work so I added baroque music at a very low level. That helped a lot. I started to relax.
Playing classical music at a meal is a memory from a high school retreat at a Franciscan Monastery outside of my home town. It was a very memorable experience. One of the best things about it was the meal times. No talking but beautiful music in the background. A real treat.
So, in the end that is what got me through a 20 minute meal........Whew! I can't say that it is something that I found easy but I learned a lot in the process...... It can be done but you have to work at it...............God bless the monks.

Wow. I think taking 20 minutes to eat would be a real challenge for me. The first thing I thought of was could I "drag out" my meal time to that length. The thought about "dragging out" tells you a lot, huh? Bob and I usually eat meals with others: breakfast with Charlie Rose, lunch with Steven Colbert, and dinner with whoever is there . . . Sheldon Cooper, etc. Yes, we eat with the TV. I would love to just have nice dinner conversation with Bob, but he is a bonafide TVaholic. So FAT chance of that changing. I say FAT chance since the literature is full of stories about how TV eating makes people fat since they are eating more mindlessly. Maybe I need to eat on the patio and set a new trend! Thanks for the blog. Love the imagery of the monastery.
