Self Respect

Monday, October 28, 2013

I have a bad habit of letting people take advantage of me. So many times I've been asked for money by someone I know. The economy is tough, but after a while it's easy to spot the moochers. They start asking you for money, hovering around you while you conveniently have your wallet out at a vending machine. For some reason they feel entitled to the green inside of it, assuming you have plenty to go around.

That's gotta stop.

If I get labeled a bad word because I'm not giving anymore handouts then so be it. I'll always help out my close friends and family, but there are too many users. I understand it's a sign of the times, but I also know many people significantly younger than me who don't know how to budget their money. It's something that comes with getting older. I've become frugal. Not cheap, but frugal.

No more letting people walk all over me. I even know someone who blatantly yelled 'shut up' one day when I couldn't stop coughing who continues to ask things from me. I do it to 'keep the peace,' but that's exhausting. I won't be downright mean to them, but it's time to stand my ground. Enough is enough.

I'm not sure how I would respond if my friends asked/demanded/expected.. I don't mind treating friends to a coffee or a snack now and then. I'm rarely asked, I just offer if we are hanging out and I decide I need a treat. I don't expect anything in return, and I don't consider it a debt. It all usually evens out over time.

If you are always giving and never getting (this goes for both money and other social exchanges), it does not sound like a very good friendship to me..

I'm with Gina. I don't give unless I want too because if they "borrow" and don't pay back and it will annoy me or make me lose respect for them...well, I learned a long time ago that there are those who will ALWAYS take and never give back. They aren't "worth it" because I am worth more. I've probably more generous than I should be, but I don't mind giving....it's the ones who ask that bother me. We all work hard for our money and I try not to make judgements about what others spend money on. I know for sure that there are people who think I spend my money on crazy stuff...but it's MY money. And you are exactly right...it's about self-respect. You can't buy friends. And if they are only there when the wallet is out, you can buy them, but they aren't "friends"!!

My personal policy was that if I would be sad or mad if the person did not repay me then I wouldn't give but if I was okay with giving then I would. That is a motto to live by. I have never regretted what I have given.

We call the 'spongers' in the UK. They need to learn that it is THEIR problem - not yours.

    A good decision.
