Read James 2.
This chapter confused me quite a bit when I first began my walk. I had read that we are saved by grace and not by works then I read what appears to say we need faith and works. There are different types of “works”. In one aspect it could be considered keeping the Law. In another aspect it is charitable giving. Then there is the attitude of the worker, what is my motivation for doing this? For some being involved in a civic group or charity is a box to check off as they climb the societal ladder. For some it is simply a way to feel good about themselves. But where does faith come into this? It is a part of a long term process, as we have faith in Christ and begin to follow His teachings, our hearts and attitudes change. Just as He had compassion on all people, as we grow to be more like Him we too will develop these compassions and be motivated to do similar works. So the works become the outward evidence of the faith within us. They are not always some profound action. It is stopping to help someone whose grocery bag has burst open, changing a flat tire, opening a door, even picking up trash.
