Getting better....I think

Sunday, October 27, 2013

I felt funny about writing about something as personal as a UTI in a blog, but I'm glad I did. Thanks to my SparkFriends, I've learned about d-mannose and AZO capsules, both of which are helpful in preventing UTI's. I'm not sure which one I will try yet, but I'm thinking it would be good to do one or the other while I'm on chemo since I don't want this to come back AGAIN. I know cranberry juice is also helpful, but I don't want all the sugar that is in most cranberry juices. True cranberry juice is really TART!

The UTI seems to be better, but I don't feel like I'm out of the woods yet with this thing. I'll see how I'm doing by Wednesday when I go back to Nashville for my next chemo. We'll see....

Other than that, things are going along pretty good. I've decided to create a new SparkPeople goal for myself to do 10 minutes of exercise a day. Even if I'm having a "bad" day, I know I can at least do that. I'm realizing that the more I keep up at least some form of activity, the better I feel and I think it will help a lot down the road when I have surgery. It will spend up my recovery time and make me less likely to have complications.

Life is good!

You are a sharp cookie ...oops...wrong word! Very bright lady, how's that? You could even break the 10 min. exercise down into 2 sessions of 5 min. each...and all movement counts!

Sorry about the UTI...sounds like you're doing a good job tracking down solutions.

You have so many friends on SP...and in your non-cyber world, too, I'm sure. I hope you feel the circle of support coming your way!

Big hugs and keep on truckin'! You're doing great! emoticon

emoticon Kay, UTIs are a big blippin' deal if you have one and I bet just about every one of your women Sparker buddies has, with or without being worn down by chemo.

emoticon EXCELLENT goal, the 10 minutes of fitness, and you can break it down into two fives.

All good replies and so helpful to you dear Kay. That's what I SO love about the spark community...we are all so caring and helpful to each other. It's really a source of healing within itself. I always juice fresh or frozen cranberries and add in an apple, an orange or a date...seems to take down some of the tartness. I've always heard that the actual fruit is better than a pill...but you could ask a nutritionist about that to be sure...I bet we have them on spark too! emoticon

Good idea on being active 10 min a day. I hope you feel better soon, I finally figured out the abbreviation for UTI when you mentioned cranberry juice. emoticon

I ordered a cranberry juice concentrate from Amazon & put some into an 8 oz. glass of seltzer water 2 times a day. Works like a charm! You don't get all that sugar.

Praying for your quick recovery. emoticon

I don't like the taste of cranberry juice at all, but I use the cranberry in pill form. I've been taking it since I had a UTI about 3 years ago, which I probably got because my immune system was down from the radiation and chemo I was going through at the time. I don't take the cranberry every day, but since I am still on chemo and vulnerable to infections, if I feel I am getting symptoms of a UTI, I will start taking the cranberry twice per day, and take it for a couple of weeks. Of course, if it feels like it is getting worse instead of better, then I let my oncologist know, but so far, I haven't been diagnosed with a UTI since I had that one 3 years ago.

I use the AZO pills sometimes too, they help with the pain also, and I have used them right along with antibiotics. I actually use the Equate brand of those from Walmart; they are much less expensive than the brand name ones.

On the days when I don't feel motivated to exercise, I tell myself that whatever I do, I only have to do it for 10 minutes, but I find that 99% of the time, once I get past that first 10 minutes, I don't feel like I have to stop. Sometimes, it's just getting started on it that is the hard part for me. I also like to see my fitness minutes add up when I track them, that is a big motivator for me!

I admire your determination in keeping up with your exercise while having a UTI as well as undergoing chemo. Not sure I could do the same.
