Both of my kids have always had an issue with staying on track. They get distracted very easily. A few years ago i got a call from my oldest's (angelina) teacher hinting at putting her on medication to help her concentrate. This really ticked me off because i do not believe in giving kids meds for something like that.
So last week i had a conference with Angelina's 4th grade teacher and she said the same thing. I was very upset but i kept my cool. She is getting A's and B's in every subject except Math. She has never really been good at math and is getting a D- now. We are working on this. I even explained to the teacher that she learns better one on one, and having her repeat back the directions so that she understands helps.
So yesterday i had a conference with my youngest's (Alana) teacher. She said she was doing great in all subjects, and even excelling in spelling, reading and math. AWESOME!! BUT....she said it takes a while for her to get her work done because she gets distracted. She said she thinks she has ADD and that i should talk to my paediatrician about putting her on meds. I kept my cool but explained to her how i am totally against the idea and that will never be an option. She said she understands and recommended that i put her through counseling or therapy then. This is something else that i am strongly against. Friends and Family (and SP) are the best therapy there is. I went through counseling through most of my childhood and i cannot stress enough how much of a waste of time and money it was.
So i guess I'm looking for advice. We have a very good schedule at home, we do the same routine everyday and never have a problem. We have a marker board with the weeks schedule on it. We do homework at the table (with no distractions) as soon as we get home from school. They have chores that they do every day. But i dont know how to make sure they stay on task at school.
