Taco Seasoning Mix

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

1 teaspoon chili powder
3/4 teaspoon paprika
3/4 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/8 teaspoon garlic powder
Pinch cayenne
Combine and add to 1 pound browned and drained ground beef. Add a little water, if desired. This will be drier than taco meat made with a commercial mix due to the lack of thickeners. It tastes just as good as the store bought kind and is a lot cheaper to make.
Makes enough for 1 pound ground beef or 4-6 servings
This recipe makes enough for about 6 batches of taco meat:
2 tablespoons chili powder
5 teaspoons paprika
4 1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon salt
2 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon cayenne
Mix and store in a jar.
Makes 24 teaspoons
UPDATE: The last time I made meat for tacos, I added a tablespoon or so of Taco Bell restaurant-style sauce to it. It made it a bit more like it was made with a taco seasoning mix. It was juicer and held together better. The carbs in Taco Bell sauce are minimal, but be careful of the Ortega brand taco sauce. It has a lot of sugar in it.

I am so excited to try this. I don't like wasting money at the store on healthier versions I can make myself. Thank you.

I am with Mom on this.. I never buy taco seasoning either. So much easier to make our own... and... we can control the sodium in it.

WAHAHAHA... your arsenal Dawn? Am sorry... but the vision that gave me would make you laugh too. You are going to succeed with getting healthy... this is going to be fun being right there with you all along the way. (has visions of Dawn with her combat boots and fatigues on.. with her camouflage apron with the "I am in control" patch on the front... armed with kitchen mallets and forks... and defending her arsenal of good healthy foods and recipes against the assault of the not so healthy stuff).

    Thanks for sharing Dawn.

I use to until I decided to get serious with my life style change. I am determined to eat 90% or as close to it as I can (and can afford). I want to know what is going into my food. Besides, can be very therapeutic and relaxing,, I use to stress out over it but now I find it is fun to try new recipes,, if they don't come out good then I tweak it and try again,, before I would get upset and have the attitude of "why bother?" If you have a different combo I would love to know (if you don't mind sharing), I love having different recipes for the same thing in my arsenal.
