Beware of The TOY MONSTER

Wednesday, October 23, 2013

Trying to work with the kids on putting toys away after they play with them as the toy room looked like a hurricane hit it! So I cleaned it up but several of the toys that I had asked them to clean up like the legos and all remained on the floor.....so I boxed them up and hid them downstairs. I then made a poster with a picture of a purple monster that said "BEWARE OF THE TOY MONSTER....he loves to take toys that are not put away"....I hung it on the wall. It was so funny...when the kids came home from school they saw how clean and organized the toy room was and both said they liked it that way............but then they went rushing around to see what was missing. Sean noticed his favorite legos and was wondering what he could do to get them back. I said I didn't know but maybe if he wrote a note to the toy monster saying that he was sorry and would put them away next time who the toy monster put them back. So he wrote a note and left it on the clean table in the toy room when he went to bed. Of course the toy monster put back the legos all organized in their box with a note that said "you get a pass this time". When Sean got up this morning he was so excited to get them back. Hoping the Toy Monster continues to work while we are here.

It's getting really chilly in Philly! I have like 4 layers on and a blanket as I sit here writing. Yep my blood sure is thin.

I hope everyone is doing great. Have a terrific day.
Sallie

Great idea and a fantastic poster. You are
the best grandma Sallie. Glad it worked.
I hope it's not too cold for you. I could use some
of that cooler weather as I am melting in sticky
32 degree heat(Celsius).

Great idea to get them to keep a clean room and let mom know so that she can continue the monster idea.

Stay warm :)
(I just got back from Germany and I ended up with 4 layers of clothing over there as well... I hate being cold.)

    Wonderful poster!!!
My elder son's home needs one like it!!!
That or a sign on the driveway: 'DANGER AHEAD: TOY-ZONE!'

Chilly in Philly. Sort of has a ring to it, huh?
Have a great day!

What a great idea! Having an "outside force" making them clean up is so much better than parents nagging them :)

Very creative and clever!! My DIL simply takes the toys from the floor, puts them in a basket, and around Christmas time has the kids go through the basketed toys to see what should be donated and what should go into the spring garage sale. Sort of a forced choice!!

Sounds like you're enjoying your time with the grandkids - glad to hear it!!

I love that!! And it's so much less mean than how I dealt with that when my kids were little--they have never let me forget that when I said whatever isn't picked up and put away--I'm going to pick it up once and put it in the trash (they were around 8 and 10). They didn't believe me, so I had to follow through--had to throw away the Aristocats movie (which was in the Old Yeller clam-shell case). They believed it after that, and I never had any trouble with it--they are 20 and 18 now--I found another copy of Aristocats at a garage sale this summer--believe it or not--they were thrilled!! (I have felt bad about it all these years).
