Little bits of fitness can add up! In addition to my gym work outs, I strive to do a fifteen minute walk at work in the am and another in the afternoon. Others join in;time flies as we talk and walk. Our path includes hills, a pond and lots of geese. With two breaks, we walk 1.6 miles. We keep a fairly good pace. I believe the boss who has officially approved this activity gets as much out of our walking as we do. We return re energized and refreshed and I know it has helped my productivity. No more afternoon slump! It's a great stress reliever as well. On those days when life gets in the way, I know I have gotten at least that much fitness in. It's a rare day that we can't get outside to walk, but we do have a treadmill in our break room as a back up. I count my blessings that we have a wellness program at work, that I have a great walking path, companions and relatively good weather most of the time. Walking shoes and clean socks under your desk are all it takes! Plus a good umbrella, cold weather gear, water and a good attitude!

Medical research backs up the need for these intermittent breaks from sitting at your desk all day.

    Great wisdom here! Since I'm now self-employed, I no longer have my old work walking buddies to motivate me. They made all the difference for me. We would walk for 45 minutes rain or shine. Tonight I pushed myself to do an evening walk, even though I had already exercised. It was so worth it.

    So true! On days when I am in the office, I try to make myself get up and walk regularly. It works really well when I am drinking lots of water ;~}

    I had to run several errands today - and I've got my fitbit and sparktrackers on. I parked on the other side of the mall entrance I needed to be at, returned to the car after every purchase and lo and behold I got 13,000 steps in today. You are bang on when you say that little bits of fitness add up. Keep up the great work fitting in those fitness moments!

    I wish my workplace had a wellness program for the employees! We were on our own, but since I have retired I take my dog for several long walks a day and we are both much happier! Thanks for the reminder to keep moving!

  You're lucky. Keep up the good work! Wish that my supervisor and other upper management would/could see the benefits to having staff exercise. I just use my lunch time to get in a walk or use the fitness center (old equipment but...it works). It's not encouraged here at work but....i want to do it so....i do whatever i can.

Keep moving....enjoying (friends & nature)....whatever your goal... emoticon

    emoticon My work place has this as well but I am out of shape and too embarrassed to let my co-worker see how hard that hill would be on me. Maybe I should just start with the parking lot. Thanks for the post and the encouragement it brings to others.

    You are indeed fortunate to have both a supportive work environment and the tops (back-up treadmill) you need to succeed at getting a good fitness workout each day.

Congrats, and keep up the great work.

    My workplace has a wellness program as well. My walking team "Walking Wonders" Meets everyday at 10am for our 30 min walk. If raining we walk in the parking structure and we still get in a good work out due to the incline. We walk from the bottom up to the 5th floor of the parking structure. I get this walk in 5 days a week on top of my 45 min am work out on the treadmill at 4:30 am.
