My New Year's Resolution for 2013 was to be a healthier new me. I did not want to focus on numbers, but on feeling better and accomplishing small goals over time. I am EXTREMELY proud to say 10 months later...I am feeling healthier, buying new clothes because my old ones are too big, and I just ran/walked my first 5K yesterday!!!
I could not have done all this without the support and tools at SparkPeople! The key for me is tracking my food, setting goals, and joining challenges to keep me motivated. I have been able to completely give up diet soft drinks (not a drop since the Junk Food Challenge that began MLK day), cut back on my sugar, and train for the 5K (among other numerous small goals that I set over time).
Completing a 5K was one of my biggest challenges. I have always said, "If you ever see me running down the road, pull over because someone is chasing me!"
So, obviously, I have never been a big fan of running. I actually wanted to do this 2 years ago when I turned 40. But, by the time it came around, I knew I wasn't in enough shape even though I had been training for a few months. This year though, I really wanted to make it a goal. I started the 5K Your Way Rookie Running Program on SparkPeople at the end of July. My long term goal was to run the 5K that I had chickened out of 2 years ago. Yesterday, I crossed the finish line
I came in 3rd from last, but that's ok, my goal was to finish and beat my average time (which I did by 3 minutes!). Now, I have a new goal: To improve my time by 10 minutes and participate again in a 5K in the spring.
I don't think I will ever be a "runner," but I have enjoyed getting outside and the challenge. I also like getting a TShirt
. Although, I guess I haven't really accepted my new healthier shape, because I ordered my shirt two sizes too big. I can always use it as a night shirt!
As 2013 winds down, I know my next big challenge will be all of the holiday sugar temptations over the next two months. Sugar is my nemesis...I love sugar cookies, candy, pumpkin pie...all of it! Unfortunately, my body does not agree. Now that I have cut back on it the past 10 months, my blood sugar levels are completely normal (I was starting to creep to diabetic levels at the first of the year), my migraines went from 1-2 a week to maybe 1 a month, and I have lost 65 lbs. I will really be relying on SparkPeople to keep me motivated and away from all the sugary goodness. I know I can find substitutes for my cravings in the recipes, so I am looking forward to trying new, healthier treats and starting new holiday traditions. Thank you SparkPeople for helping me accomplish my goals!
