I haven't blogged in a while because the main thing that has been on my mind was being ready for the Empire State Marathon and I figured I'd spare everyone a constant barrage of that. But now it is upon me so I'll indulge.
Saturday morning Judith and I will be volunteering at 5K & 10K races with the Southern Tier Runner's Club. I would have liked to run the 10K but thought it wouldn't be a good idea the day before running a marathon. So it will be up at six a.m. and a 45 mile drive to Endwell. We should be finished there by around 11:30. Then we'll drive to Syracuse for packet pickup and expo. We'll stay overnight at a Comfort Inn that is two miles from the Marathon start line. We'll walk to the race. The weather is predicted to be 40 deg. and windy at the 7:30 start with a rising chance of rain from 37% to 53% over my expected duration. I think the not so great weather would normally help me because I am used to running in it. On the other hand it will probably cause a lot of no shows so I'll be running with a smaller crowd of more dedicated runners and my relative position will suffer. I'm not concerned, but I am curious to see what the effect will be.
I had planned on losing about ten lbs. in the two weeks before the race, but I actually gained five. I cut back on mileage and changed my diet to more carbs and less protein. The calorie count only went up slightly from about 1800 a day to 2200. I'll have to be vigilant during the week after the race because I probably won't be burning off a whole lot of calories then.
We'll stay in Syracuse through Monday because I couldn't be sure of checking out of the hotel on time if we only spent one night. Anyway, we plan on having a good time. I'm going to aim for a time of less than 4:30:00 but I haven't managed that in training yet so I won't be upset if I miss.
