I water walk and jog a few times a week. I knew that it burned more calories. Plus, the added bonus of the not hurting my knees.

I can say this much for water..10 weeks ago I was in a wheelchair a LOT. I could not walk 1/8 mile on dry land before I got toe drop and a lot of pain. Yesterday I walked 3/4 mile on dry land.... my physical therapist says its because of all the deep water work I do. he is shocked at far and how fast I have come.. I have also worked really really hard.

Easier on a low impact exercise and less dripping of sweat in the water! Water is more resistant to push against than air! Keep up the great work. emoticon

FIFIFRIZZLE, After a while, I did graduate myself to some land-based walking as I got stronger. I wanted to try to build some endurance with my bad ankle. I'd suggest doing a combination of land and water, at least to start. Water helps ease muscle soreness, in addition to burning all those calories, but I like being able to walk around in stores, outside, etc.

I learned this during my water instructor training (through Aquatic Exercise Association).

It was the first exercise I could do that actually seemed to make a difference to my body, burning calories. I began to get great results during the very first few weeks.

I was told that you can burn 3-5 times as many more calories doing water aerobics compared to land. Something that not all of my students grasp is that you really need to exert yourself (with the exception of physical limitations) to achieve that. Merely bobbing along, singing to the music or chatting with a friend won't get those terrific results. I'm a little sneaky though: If I hear too much singing or chatting, I switch things up and try to increase the intensity or move them around the pool more. emoticon

emoticon I think the Resistance of the Water makes it sort of Strength Training plus Cardio which gives you the Higher Calorie Burn. The fact that it "Feels Easy" and is "Fun" is Pure Bonus!!

This is great news for those of us who have been advised to do aquarobics rather than using gym equipment, I thought it was second-best. I've been meaning to go to aquarobics for so long; your post has inspired me to make it happen. I have watched a class and they were enjoying themselves - fun and doing you good at the same time, you don't often get that!
