EXERCISING – when it's cold outside. Brrr!

First, let me make it clear that this is NOT a picture of me. When it is that cold you will find me indoors staying warm and sipping fragrant tea.

So the question is – how do I get my exercise in when “the weather outside is frightful”?

This isn't so difficult. I have fibromyalgia and I have found that I do best with exercises specially adapted for my needs so I already have quite a few resources that I use indoors all year round. I have exercise dvd's that I use for cardio, strength training, pilates, and tai chi. (There's also a yoga one that I haven't tried yet! Maybe I will put it on my list – just for variety).

I also attend a class for fibromyalgia patients in which we do all of the above types of activity– plus wonderful stretching and relaxation. Stronger Seniors also has excellent chair exercises that are doable for me. In addition, the Spark Chair Exercise Team has posted lots of free seated exercises online.



I find working out in warm water very helpful. I am fortunate enough to have access to an indoor warm-water pool only a few blocks from my home. My physical therapist gave me an adaptive protocol that I can do on my own. So I plan to get back in the water.

And, of course, the very best thing about winter indoor exercise is -- it makes me even more happy to get outdoors as soon as the weather gets warmer -- AND drier again.

    emoticon I'm glad you have a wide variety of resources available to you for exercising indoors. You are lucky to have a warm water swimming pool not far from your home. That is one of the things I miss about living in the city. It's people like you and me that refuse to let our ailments stop us that make us a force to be reckoned with. emoticon

    Yes, I've heard that cold weather is a bear with fibromyalgia. I'm sorry you have to deal with that. But, I'm very glad you can do the warm water pool. I'd go back if it hadn't eaten my skin up like it did. My skin is so dry on it's own, that with the amount of chemicals that pool uses were too strong for me. It took months to heal from and I'm not really willing to go back. Wish I could. I loved it, the people were fun and the exercise was great.
