Old Roles

Thursday, October 17, 2013

We all have roles that we fall into, whether we realize it or not. Being a middle child and a mother, I tend to naturally fall into the category of trying to keep the peace, take care of everyone and everything, make sure others are protected, not think about putting me first. Someone in my family is falling into an old role and I instinctively went into mine.

Thank goodness, I happened to have an appointment with my therapist right in the middle of this. She helped me take a step back and take a look at the big picture. I was reminded that everyone is responsible for themselves first. We don't do ourselves or anyone else any good if we don't. We need to be at our best in order to give our best.

So, I am sitting back and thinking about what I need to do for me. What can I do to make myself better? Can I make others take care of themselves and do what is right? No, I can't. I can support others - if they want me to. My wish for everyone today is for each of us to answer the question "Am I taking care of me?"

For me as a wife and mother of three adult children and five grandchildren I find I am always trying to fix their problems . I have to constantly remember our children are intelligent adults and have to learn to do things even if it causes problems that they have to learn from. That is how I grew myself through trial and error.

It's always right to do what is right and wait for our feelings to catch up with us.
