"My" cats

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

I am enjoying my two feral cats. They are now used to eating on our front porch. They come near at meal time when I shake the food jar--kind of like a dinner bell--but won't eat from the dish until I have gone inside. However, one of them will eat from my hand if I am very still and just sit there and the other will eat from the jar lid within about 2 feet of me. It is amazing what they will do when they are hungry. They are very scaredy cats and will leave rapidly at the slightest different sound or motion. (My tummy growled and they left.)
I started feeding from my hand to make sure that my 2 cats were getting the food I put out as there is a black feral (we call this one Sooty) that lives in the neighborhood that likes the food also and as soon as it comes around, "my" cats leave. We also found a possum (Polly Possum) having a snack, so I like to watch so I am sure that the food goes to the right cats. The other cats and possum can have the leftovers!

One of the cats--we call her Scruffy--will come when I call her in the afternoon and will let me scratch her for a short time. She really seems to enjoy the scratching, but it is at her pleasure. When she is done, she just gets up and leaves. She even has a kind of purr that she uses when she is enjoying a good scratch. I understand that I should be honored because Scruffy gave me a very soft love bite (brush of her teeth) while I was scratching her the other day. I understand this is a show of cat affection. Otherwise, she took a taste and did not like the taste of me!

I have never had a cat before, and these I know are not really mine, but I am enjoying them for the time they are here and getting to know a little more about the different personalities that cats have.

October is Feral Cat Month. Cats are really cool! They like affection just like any other creature and I am glad that you are taking good care of them! They might not be "your" cats, but it sounds like you are their human. Thank you for feeding them. Do be careful though.

I fed a 'gentleman of the road' for several years before he moved in with me one hard winter. He started sneaking in and sleeping on a dining room chair, under the table against the radiator. One day I sat on another chair beside him, stroked him and he climbed onto my lap. I have had him ever since. That was in 1999. He's very doddery now, but still very loving.

Glad things are working out with them. They probably wouldn't let you photograph them either, but it would be cool to see them!

Daisy does love bites. She's the first cat I've had that does that. You are a very kind soul to care for the ferals. I had a tuxedo kitty I use to feed and I had to watch for the raccoons since they loved the cat food. For that matter, so did the Blue Jays. Thank you for having such a kind heart.

I didn't know that about cats taking a gentle little bite of you. My white cat, Angel, does it to me sometimes, and I wondered why she did it. It is surprising the progress you can make with a cat. I just realized that the end of November we will have had Luci, our tabby, for a whole year -- I never had a cat before her.

Of course you don't have any of the problems with hair on your furniture or having to change litter boxes as yours are just strays and they come for food. Mine two are strictly indoor cats. Probably a big difference, but I find cats to be very lovable and are fun to have around, and really not much trouble.
