Rest and Cross Training

I took the day off yesterday from running, and today I'm going to try some lower impact activity (elliptical 20 min and walking 20 min). I used a heating pad to ease slight soreness in my outer ankle (IT band?) and hips/knees. Trying to listen to my body and prevent injury! about a week and a half to go before my 5K. I'm planning to walk it, since it's my first 5K, but I'm fascinated by the fact that there is a competitive run option before the walk. Maybe next year I'll train for that portion of the event? Or I could find put what other 5K races are happening in my area throughout the year.....I'm not conjuring to anything just yet, just interested/curious.
