Just finished the book Sybil

Sunday, October 13, 2013

Sybil, about the real woman Shirley Mason, is truly an amazing story and a very well written book.

I was not happy to find another book, Sybil Exposed, which said the first book was all a lie and fabricated for money. Then, fortunately, I found this review of the second book. Relief. I don't like to be duped!

I am quoting the following from from Goodreads:
As Shirley Mason's closest living relative, I was close to her for the 30 plus years through the saga of her life journey. In fact, I was with her the weekend of her death, at her request, and was one of the only people that was in constant contact with her all those years. I kept her identity confidential at her fervent request. Through all these years up until literally the day before she died, she verified the complete accuracy of the book, 'Sybil'. I find it very interesting that Debbie Nathan did not come to the person closest to Shirley Mason for facts, but rather wove a web of suppositions that are not factual. Knowing Dr. Connie Wilbur, and Flora Shrieber also, the book concerns me greatly. It is an attack on their credibility, their research, and their professionalism. And, the book is a complete attack on the person I loved, Shirley Mason.

I forgot about the book. I will have to read it again. Perhaps I was in HS when I read it before.

I never read the book, but is this the same Sybil that Sally Field played in the movie? About a woman with multiple personalities?

I read the book a century ago! I didn't know that it existed a book that attacked "Sibyl."
If I have known, I would have criticized the attacker. My reasoning says that Sibyl is about a true story because it's not the first or last case. Also, because the case was handled by a professional, all the facts must be in Dr. Connie Wilbur's file.

I enjoyed this book. It was one of the reasons why I decided to become a social worker.

Very interesting that you mentioned this. I recently had been reading up on Sybil and also read some of that so called 'exposed' info. Thanks for letting us know....
