Recipe Review!

Sunday, October 13, 2013

We have revived the recipe review game over at the At Goal and Maintaining + Transition to Maintenance team. I had this one saved for ages, so it was a perfect time to try it.

Mom's Slow Cooker Pork Chops and Sweet Potatoes

Here is a link to the recipe

This was really simple to put together and cooked nicely in my slow cooker. Per some of the other reviews, I sprinkled a little cinnamon and nutmeg over the top of the sweet potatoes (I used raw, not canned).

I think everyone in the family loved this but me :( I found the whole dish really bland. I'm certainly not ready to give up on it yet as it was healthy and easy. I may try just a tad brown sugar on the sweet potatoes next time or maybe two cans of cranberry sauce (they were the only thing that I really liked). I also might try browning the chops before putting them in.

This recipe got a ton of great reviews on sparkrecipes and I'm no food snob, so I'm really surprised. Like I said, I think it may just need a little tinkering.

I have done pork in the slow cooker without browning and I am not a fan either. I think it is tastier when I brown it first and then finish it in the slow cooker. It gives the meat so much more flavor. But, I love the idea of putting the potatoes and the cranberry sauce into the pot too. Sounds delicious and I may have to try it. Thanks for sharing.

Since the family loved it, it's worth tinkering with, right? I see one reviewer says she seasoned the pork with thyme and rosemary as well as salt and pepper; those sound like they would be great additions.

I am in the minority that prefers sweet potatoes without any added sweetness, unless I'm making them into a pie or another dessert. But it's intriguing to think about slow-cooking them with cranberry sauce & pork . . .

To me, most of the fun of trying new recipes is the tinkering....that sounds like a good start to the recipe, hope you tinker away and make it great!
