OK, and before you kill me for this statement let me explain myself.
For me, people have much higher value than a chuck, as cute as it is. I try my best to be humane to animals, and I love animals (I mean, we just got a dog) but when the love for animals endangers the life of humans I reckon the priority is wrong... I much rather have a sponsor child in India then protest for animal rights. There you go, judge me.
So having said this I used to buy eggs from caged chickens, as sorry as I am for them, that's what I did. Prices in Australia are sky high especially when coming from Europe. The first couple months living here I was blown away by food prices... like 24$ for a kilo of coffee, or (back then) 14$ for a kilo of bananas (luckily banana prices are down again)or 3.60$ for the cheapest kind of eggs. After 2 1/2 years of living here though I'm acclimatized to the prices: that's just what you pay for it, move on.
So, why in the world am I talking about chickens in the first place?? Long story short, during the last couple of months of my "face plant in the mud" concerning my eating I researched alternative approaches to a healthy diet. I stumbled across a couple of bamboozling things and it made me think, re-consider, re-evaluate what I thought was a healthy diet. One of those brain twisters is that apparently you can re-mineralize your teeth... and somehow it makes sense to me. Our bodies are so marvellously designed that it can heal itself (to a certain degree) so why not the teeth as well??? I've got rotten teeth... got my first golden tooth when I was 13, nothing to be proud of. I tried everything to prevent more decay, flossing, brushing, florid rinses, electric tooth brush, cutting down sweets.. and still, I was devastated when I still had holes in my teeth.
Yet, why again, am I talking about teeth?? First chickens, then teeth... Well, this re-mineralizing of teeth has lots to do with nutrition intake, my diet, the stuff I eat. It isn't only not eating sweets but something much bigger. And as I've tried to get healthier teeth the usual way and failed I thought I'll give this more... uhm... alternative approach a try, hei, if it doesn't work out, what can I loose???
I still have to wrap my brain around it, but it's basically going back to basics, as far as I understand, eating food as little processed as possible, going back to how people used to eat, more fat, less carbs.
And here the chickens and the eggs come in again. Well, going back to basics also means the chicken should eat "back to basics" food as well... you know... hopping over the fields like a spring chicken, eating grass... and worms... and whatever else chickens were meant to eat... so here you go, now you know why I will eat eggs from free range chickens from now on... as much as possible that is.
I also want to get my hands on raw cow's milk, milk from happy cows, eating grass all day long... unless they eat the grass again that they ate a couple hours previously... funny how cows work.
So, now you know why this is a new part of my journey, with lots of trial and errors ahead. Many of you will wholeheartedly disagree with what I've just said, that's fine with me, I just try to live healthier, have a better oral health and maybe giving the binge-monster the boot once and for all.
There are many more aspects to this new approach, like grains and that you have to pre-treat them and stuff which I don't really understand quite yet... but, hey, it's a learning process... you might think me totally gaga and de-railed but so would I have thought about a couple months back... we'll see what the future brings.
