Loving yourself, when and how

Sunday, October 13, 2013

Loving yourself is a tricky concept, maybe I'm nitpicking a bit, but I think it's very important.
Loving or hating yourself while you obese or any other condition for that matter makes you keep doing what you've been doing...eating or doing other things to your body.
Most people understand destructive nature of their actions, be it overeating, drug use, prostitution, excessive piercing, plastic surgeries you name it.
If you hate yourself you keep doing it to punish yourself.
If you love yourself you maintain your behavior out of love.

To start changing yourself you need to ACCEPT YOURSELF, and that is much easier said then done. Only by accepting you can take measures to change yourself, turn your behaviors 180 degrees and at long last start moving towards your goal, not away from it.

And that's where you will find love with yourself, not when you meat your goal but when you direction will become steady, unbreakable by small things and inevitably leading to better yourself. Loving yourself at that moment is very important, and again by loving yourself you'll keep on going.

Very, very ongoing challenge for me to work on. A fellow member of SP pointed me toward a very helpful and inspirational TED talk which you might enjoy:

This is the hardest thing for me to be able to do. On some days it is easier when I am feeling good about either how I look or something positive I have done. I know I need to do it daily in order for it to permanently take a positive effect in my life. I appreciate your blog reminding me of just that. emoticon emoticon

Beautiful, and so true.
I am FINALLY learning to love myself, and that love is translating into loving actions toward my body. You are so lucky to have figured it out at your age. Your wisdom has saved you a LOT of suffering.

Well done, sweetie.

Love, Ginger

It is true that accepting oneself is easier said than done. It has taken me 52 years to begin to know and like who I am.
When we love ourselves, we give others permission to love us too.
