Should it be advise or advice?

Friday, October 11, 2013

Many people confuse the words advise with advice.

Believe it or not, these are two different words. Although they seem similar they are completely different and are not interchangeable.

You see, advise in a VERB and advice is a NOUN

What is the difference you ask? Well a verb is an action word and a Noun is a thing….

In other words, I can advise (verb) you about something or I can give you advice (noun) about something.

If you were lucky enough to be taught grammar in school, your teacher would have emphasized the difference between these two words and given you little quizzes which would have made up part of your mark (grade).

So here is a little quiz from “grammar monster. See how many you get right.

If you are interested in learning more about this subject matter, I would ADVISE you to do a google search . There are many other websites that will explain the definitions of these two words.

One of my theories is that texting is a major culprit in poor spelling and poor grammar

    I maxed the quiz!

The one I see a lot is someone says they need to "loose" weight.

And all the confusion I see on SP blogs over Their, There and They're as well as Your and You're. Sometimes it is a challenge to read a blog because of the grammatical errors. If you are looking at a word and the meaning of it is registering in your brain, it becomes down right confusing when the next word in the sentence doesn't "fit"

Another one I see alot in my teaching is raft and wrath! A raft is something you ride in water on, wrath is strong anger! Even teachers have messed that one up! I advise people to get advice on how to use the 2 words correctly! Oh! another is affect and effect! Affect is the verb and effect the noun! How did the effects of the storm affect you?
