EnjoyThe Ride

Wednesday, October 09, 2013

I was talking to a lady about my teenager driving when she asked me if I enjoyed the ride. I replied yes I did even though it still makes me nervous. He is so young and so many young people do not take driving seriously. Then she leaned in and put her hand on mine and asked, “but are you really enjoying the ride?” She went on and shared a story about how nervous she was teaching her son to drive and how he too was nervous at first. He would take curves very carefully trying not to accelerate too much, etc. She was smiling and I could tell this was a fond memory for her. She said she was nervous but her son did eventually learn how to drive and he was a good driver. Sadly years later his car was smashed by someone who wasn't and his grave is not far from where she taught him how to drive. I was absolutely speechless. Then she said “I could be bitter about it, or I can be better.” WOW! I cannot imagine (nor do I want to) what this woman has been through, but I can say that she was an incredible inspiration to me. We can all blame someone else or we can take comfort from our memories and provide encouragement to someone else. Her point to me was simply enjoy the ride and I don’t think I will ever forget it. We can choose bitter or better… even in terrible circumstances.

So today I share this you, my spark family, to remind you also… enjoy the ride! emoticon

emoticon Amazing blog. I think you met an angel. I think she had a big message for you and I'm so glad that you understood what she said, listened to her story and "got" what she was trying to say. It's a beautiful analogy of just enjoying the journey instead of the focus on the destination. Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful, albeit tearjerker story!!

    Oh my! What a shock!
It is good to remember to enjoy the ride because only one person knows how long we will be here.

Oh yes, better, not bitter. What a lovely comparison and a lovely story too. Have a blessed day.
