Review of The Spark - Tales from 100# Down

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Friday, October 04, 2013

I've long been a user of various activity trackers so I was excited when Sparkpeople said they were introducing their own that would specifically synch to the website. I've been using it every day and wanted to pass along to you my thoughts about it.

What does it do?

It tracks steps, miles, activity and time and the best thing is it knows WHAT kind of activity. I was so surprised the first time I got off my recumbent bicycle and went to my activity tracking page and saw that it KNEW I was cycling! None of my other devices could do that. That was a huge plus for me. It recognizes the difference between the elliptical, bicycle, walking, running and just normal activity.

What else makes it different from other trackers?

You can wear it swimming! That's a huge plus for those that do water aerobics, swim laps, etc. It also means it won't "die" if I forget to unclip it from my shorts!

It fully synchs with the Sparkpeople website AND you get specific awards for activity for your sparkpage. I like those Glow-Getter badges! It's just extra motivation to get moving!

It's TINY so you can wear it discretely unlike some devices that stick out like a sore thumb. You can clip it to your shoe laces, your waistband and even your bra (just flip it so the clip side is out and you won't get that bump in your clothing).

The tracking page on the website is EASY to use and gives you your daily and weekly progress at a glance. You can even look back over the past 30 days!

Competition for motivation - There is a Leader Board for all Spark owners by total fitness minutes for the month. This friendly competition keeps me getting out of my chair to try to work up those rankings!

The best part - it's much more affordable than those other activity trackers I purchased. You can buy it for $59.95 right from the Sparkpeople site (upper right corner) or from Amazon.com

I love that it's pricepoint makes it more affordable for MANY and hope that if you don't have a device you will get one soon. It really does help keep you moving!

The only con is that the clip is a little hard for me to use with my arthritic hands but that also means it won't fall off too easily!

I received my Spark free in exchange for my honest review. I was not paid to post this review nor told what to say. These words are my own!

PRESS ON!

Thanks for info. I never had more then a basic pedometer. Are they easy to set up? Tried a more advanced pedometer but couldnt figure how to set up the functio.s. I'm technically challenged.

I received this emoticon as an early birthday gift from my sister and I can honestly say it is the best gift I have ever received. I not only love that it knows the activity I'm doing I also love the way it automatically adds it to my tracker. Good things really do come in small packages.

I was totally in love with my Fitbit ultra, but sadly I lost it while hiking around on top of a mountain in Switzerland (actually I suspect I lost in when I stopped by the bathroom just before taking the funicular down to the bottom. )

Now I'm debating whether to replace it with the spark device or a fitbit one. I really liked the sleep feature of the ultra which this one doesn't have.... Hmmm - decisions, decisions!! Meanwhile I'm keeping track of my steps while walking all over Paris with a cheap pedometer. Can't wait to replace THAT!!

Thank you for this information. I hope to get one soon. During the winter I spend a lot of time walking in a heated swimming pool. They tell us walking back and forth for 1 hour equals about a mile. It will be interesting to see if that is true. The warm pool is so good for my arthritic joints that I prefer to walk there and find it amazing that we can use this in water. emoticon

This is so true! It is so motivating to keep moving. Remember an object at rest tends to stay at rest, but, an object in motion tends to stay in motion!! Quite a rule of motion to remember. When and if my Omron dies, I will get one, too. As for now, I'll keep on wearing my Omron Pedometer. I've become accustomed to always wearing mine. emoticon

I have a Fitbit One and am pretty satisfied with it, except that it counts floors really weird, and doesn't give me credit for a full 3 mile walking workout that I do each morning (usually counts it as about 2 miles). But I do like that it tracks my sleep patterns, and I haven't seen anything about the Spark that mentions that.

My biggest complaint is that I saw ads for the Fitbit One on Sparkpeople, that's why I purchased one . . . had no idea that 2 months later SP would be coming out with their own version! So I can't really justify spending another $60 on the Spark when I just spent $100 on my Fitbit 2 months ago! :(

It didn't seem to work well on my foot but on my hip, bottom edge of pocket, it seems better and now I am pretty happy with this. It comes set to 6000 steps which is about 3 miles, you can change to any step amount. I find 6000 steps very challenging living in the country with not a good place to walk, but found areas in my yard that are doable. I have to walk faster for it to track so really getting exercise in this week, due to this tracker. It isn't perfect but a great motivator.

what great feedback! Thank you! When doing my fact-finding I really like to hear from folks who actually are using the product and not just the media-generated info from the company-while I don't doubt most of the info is correct-there is nothing like an unpaid person telling the pros and cons and why it works for them! emoticon emoticon

I agree! I got mine monday, and I love it.
It really showed me how much I am not doing anything when I sit in front of the computer all day! It motivates me to walk a lot more! I think my dog loves it too because now I walk her waaaaay more :) Win Win I would say!
