Review of The Spark - Tales from 100# Down

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Friday, October 04, 2013

I've long been a user of various activity trackers so I was excited when Sparkpeople said they were introducing their own that would specifically synch to the website. I've been using it every day and wanted to pass along to you my thoughts about it.

What does it do?

It tracks steps, miles, activity and time and the best thing is it knows WHAT kind of activity. I was so surprised the first time I got off my recumbent bicycle and went to my activity tracking page and saw that it KNEW I was cycling! None of my other devices could do that. That was a huge plus for me. It recognizes the difference between the elliptical, bicycle, walking, running and just normal activity.

What else makes it different from other trackers?

You can wear it swimming! That's a huge plus for those that do water aerobics, swim laps, etc. It also means it won't "die" if I forget to unclip it from my shorts!

It fully synchs with the Sparkpeople website AND you get specific awards for activity for your sparkpage. I like those Glow-Getter badges! It's just extra motivation to get moving!

It's TINY so you can wear it discretely unlike some devices that stick out like a sore thumb. You can clip it to your shoe laces, your waistband and even your bra (just flip it so the clip side is out and you won't get that bump in your clothing).

The tracking page on the website is EASY to use and gives you your daily and weekly progress at a glance. You can even look back over the past 30 days!

Competition for motivation - There is a Leader Board for all Spark owners by total fitness minutes for the month. This friendly competition keeps me getting out of my chair to try to work up those rankings!

The best part - it's much more affordable than those other activity trackers I purchased. You can buy it for $59.95 right from the Sparkpeople site (upper right corner) or from Amazon.com

I love that it's pricepoint makes it more affordable for MANY and hope that if you don't have a device you will get one soon. It really does help keep you moving!

The only con is that the clip is a little hard for me to use with my arthritic hands but that also means it won't fall off too easily!

I received my Spark free in exchange for my honest review. I was not paid to post this review nor told what to say. These words are my own!

PRESS ON!

i like the SPAT so far. last night, however, i went out to dinner and ended up losing my tracker. fortunately, the waitress had discovered it while sweeping. be careful if your tracker is attached to your shoe! emoticon

I LOVE my tracker. I have never owned a tracker like this, had the cheap ones before that sometimes didn't track or would track steps (only steps) if you bumped it or would also reset if you bumped it. Had looked at the fitbit but that was just to expensive for me right now. For me the Spark tracker was well worth the money. It gives me more motivation to get out and get my goal amount of steps in daily. emoticon Love to see all the green lights lit up!

emoticon emoticon I really love the tracker cause it lets me know when I fall short of my goal. I will be able to increase my goal when I get better at walking. Glad to have got one. Told other people about it and about Spark, cause it is a great way to help you lose weight..

I have one and I also have a Fitbit. Currently I am wearing both so I can compare. The only problem I ever had with the Fitbit was its inaccuracy when walking in place which I do a lot of during bad weather. So I am anxious to see how lil Spark does when I'm using my Wii Walk It Out.

The only problem I have encountered so far is trying to see my status on it. It takes me three or more attempts to get the lights going.

I am very pleased with my TONTO (name of my SPAT). I had been wanting a waterproof tracker for years but was disenchanted with some that are on the marker now. My primary choice of exercise is water aerobics and water jogging. I knew how long I did both, knew when I had jogged a mile (manually calculated), but never how many steps I would take during the 3 hours in the pool. Now I know and am very pleased. It does not recognize water aerobics or jogging, so I reclassify.
Loving it.

Has anyone used it with DVDs? I would like to know how accurate it is with workout DVDs as I use a lot of them for workouts as well as walking and the elliptical. I don't want to spend $60 and be frustrated/disappointed.

I'm very pleased with mine. I wear mine while swimming laps and it records my activity time correctly although it doesn't know what I did so I have to classify it myself: no big deal.

I didn't know about the swimming part. I don't swim even though I have a pool but once a year I usually manage to fall into the water (usually during the winter) and it's nice to know I don't have to worry.

I recv mine a couple of days ago, and I love it! I had bought/received other pedometers, but not one of them worked. I could wear it all day and it would say 17 steps! Get a Grip! Love Spark Tracker ability to sync...save a lot of time entering extra walking etc.
That's all for now folks, gotta get a move on!

My husband and I both have a Spark Tracker and we love ours. I am a pre-k teacher and I found out that I get half my walking in when I am at work which is usually about 4,000 steps because I have mine set for 8,000 steps. I really like mine and my husband puts his on when he gets up in the morning and wears it until about 9 at night. He does a lot of steps too. We are both very happy with ours.

I got mine last month. Yes you can ware it n the pool it wont track swimming as swimming. I ware it on my wrist or ankle (with a rubber band for your hair), it tacks movement in the pool as unknown, you can reclassify it on your fitness page. It does't track clipped my swim suit. I am thinking that the movement is to smooth in the water. I happy very it. I like that is it small and can be worn on my shoe. jmho

I heard that the device does not track activities like Curves. Is this true? Since that is where I do most of my activity it would not be accurate for me.

I got mine this week. I am satisfied so far. It tracks your every step. I purchased and use another from another weight loss program the one you pay each month and you pay $5 a month for the trackers activation. I just made a commitment this week I am unstoppable. I went to Zumba yesterday(4 times this week) and danced at a dinner last night and I went over my goal using the SP tracker. I want to thank SP for creating this free community site for many people to get healthy. And I have to say its 100 times better than the program you pay for. I'm excited to start this journey with SP.

So...is the SPARK waterproof or not? I'm reading that if you want to wear it swimming you have to "turn it off". How do you even do that? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I really don't know the answer! Thanks!

HERMIEME 11/3/2013 8:36AM

Did you try wearing it swimming? It has to be turned off. I don't appreciated being suggested as "the blogger bully" on spark radio" in emails that go out to thousands of people not saying who the "blogger bully" is. I am giving my truthful review without being given a free tracker. Sorry SP I am a faithful, motivational member and have to speak the truth to your fine print. People are being misled.

Very good review...I had heard about this and was one the fence about it, but your review gave me the info I needed to make a decision...gonna take the plunge! I spent the same amount of money a couple years ago on a pedometer/watch, thinking it would do all that I wanted it to do, easily, and keep me motivated. Fast forward a couple years...it's sitting on my dresser, buried under other stuff. It's too complicated to use...have to pull out the instruction booklet every time I want to check my progress or change a setting, because I can never remember which buttons to push in the correct sequence to do what I want it to do! This sounds "blonde proof"!! Thanks again for the review!! Can't wait to get mine!!
