I finally took the plunge to add strength training to my workout, and today I can feel that not-so-bad "burn" or soreness in my quads. I tried five different moves yesterday that I had never tried before (and decided today needed to be a rest day):
Medicine Ball Squats with Overhead Lift
I found them on Sparkpeople, I did ten reps of each, and I was surprised at how easy it was to follow the directions and look at the photos to figure out how to do the moves. As you can see, I am a pure beginner when it comes to strength training. I hated P.E. all throughout elementary, junior high, and high school. If you had told me ten years ago that I would be trying to incorporate these kinds of moves into my life on a weekly basis, I would have laughed in your face! (Or maybe I would have just politely told you you were talking to the wrong person).
Then again, if you had told the ten-years-ago me that I would become a kosher vegetarian, I never would have believed that either!
It's amazing to think about all the healthy changes I've made over the past couple years. Sparkpeople has also affected my lifestyle in ways I could never have foreseen: I am more conscious of the different kinds of nutrients my body needs (protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates), and which things I need to limit (sodium, refined sugars). Oh, and I stopped drinking soda! I used to be a "32-oz or more of Diet Coke per day" person, and now I don't drink any form of soda because I don't want to consume artificial sweeteners/High Fructose Corn Syrup. Who would have thought?
