Health Care

Tuesday, October 01, 2013

Health care reform was a bill: it was debated, amended, watered down; it passed both houses of congress and became a law.

The law was brought to the voters, with one candidate running to overturn it and one owning it as his signature achievement; the voters overwhelmingly endorsed the candidate and the law.

The law was challenged in the supreme court; a conservative court declared it constitutional.

And now, today, our government shuts down because the losing party in all of these procedural, legal and democratic processes didn't get its way.

Impeach the House republicans and let's get back to the people's business!

This is so sad and so unnecessary. I have a hard time with the stridency and the non sequitur arguments against the Affordable Care Act. I'm the first to admit it's not perfect, but it is a start at giving us equal footing with the rest of the industrialized world in access to paying for health care, since we're sticking to that model. I'm corking myself here.

On our news in New Zealand it said that Congress decided they were an essential service so they will still get paid! Typical self-serving action.
Our recent governments have watered down our welfare state but we still have basic health care for all, and are thankful for it.

I am considering voting against all incumbent congressional candidates in future elections. It sounds extreme, but I believe it would get the point across, if at least some of them lost their "jobs" (and don't get me started on Congress as a career, which I think is ridiculous) and had to go back to being part of the populace.
