Bye-bye September

Monday, September 30, 2013

It’s been a month, really? While I am good about logging in every day, it’s been a month since I’ve written a blog; my how time flies!

I have had some challenges with binges and sweets in the last month. Thankfully, they haven’t gotten so out of control that I gained too much, only 6 pounds. I’ve kept up with my running 3-4 times a week and I’m sure that’s helped.

I’m starting swimming lessons after work this evening. Me. At 42. I attempted them several years ago, back home at the local YMCA, which turned out to be a joke. The instructor was a high school girl and the lessons were not private. I was told I was going to be the only one in the class and the time frame was during “open swim” time but that usually meant there were only a few other swimmers in the water. I think I made it to four classes before I called it quits; that last time I showed up and the local Boy Scouts were having their way with the pool…and my instructor didn’t seem phased that I might have a problem with this. Thankfully, I hadn’t spent that much money on them so while I was irritated, I was more than happy not to return.

This time, I paid the expensive fee for specific, private one on one classes. I’ll let you know how it goes.

My motivation is not only learning for the sake of learning to swim but I have the Tough Mudder coming up in a month…and there are maybe 3 obstacles where I will need to swim to get through them. I can walk around and avoid these obstacles but I refuse to do that, at least not without even trying. The good thing is, my instructor is aware of the impending mudrun and knows someone who has done the Mudder…so she can get me where I need to be, focusing on what is necessary for the race. I’m excited!

I can’t believe it’s the end of September already, which means what are my goals for October?

Learning to swim
Tough Mudder
No junk/sweets!
Stop procrastinating preparing meals/lunches for work!
Keep running 3-4 times a week
Mudder circuits (specific to Tough Mudder obstacles) 3 times a week

What do you have planned? Any new 30 Day Challenge ideas? Really_Robin, how about that ab challenge you mentioned before?

Thanks for reading my blog! Have an awesome day!

Very cool that you are attacking the swimming. I was just watching the Crossfit Games and was telling the boyfriend how I wish there were affordable pools to join. Wishing you find the comfort and joy from swimming that I once had (it's been years). Glad you found private lessons:)

Can't wait to hear about your Tough Mudder. It is on my wish list for 2014. I have been thinking about challenging myself with a move a day. Maybe creating a bank of classic moves and selecting one a day to destroy. Those month long, one move challenges end up kind of boring me. Maybe things like push ups, pull ups, squats, jump rope, crunches...but do mega reps on their day. Hmmm??? That just might work.

    Go get them goals Deb!

I am so proud of you for not just walking around those obstacles and dedicating yourself to learn to swim! You are awesome! I am planning on doing the 9 minute missions from Chris Powell's book. I've looked online and there are some videos available but not the whole program. Momminator follows the Gorilla app on her smart phone but says they take about 1/2 hour to complete. Nine minutes fits better in to my schedule with trying to get cardio in. I will keep looking to see if I can find a link to send you. Do you know of any programs like that that we could do together....where it combines lots of different things not just abs or squats? I am going to be working on not giving into my junk cravings as well!
