Carbs

Monday, September 30, 2013

This past month has taught me a lot about my eating habits, both good and bad. I've been so focused on keeping the fat grams down that I only just realized my carb intake is a wee bit too high.

I'm a carb junkie emoticon

Every morning I have steel cut oats with a banana and some honey, and I've been doing Subway both for nutritional and financial reasons for lunch and dinner. ($5.40 for a roasted chicken sub? Awesome!) Yet I definitely have to get the carbs down.

Kashi has been my go-to snack of choice. Any other Sparkers have tips for easy ways to cut down my carb intake?

Thank you all for your feedback! Steel cut oats help keep me full, and I've heard are very, very good for you. Subway salads just don't taste right to me. The lettuce almost has a waxy-taste to it. I agree there's a difference between complex and simple carbs, though. Meat isn't something I'm big on, so an Atkins-like diet would never be an option.

For me, if I have oats, I don't have fruit and I eat a protein with it instead. Or I eat half the oats instead. I have to keep my carb load WAY down though because my doctor wants me to, to see if it helps my blood work out. Otherwise, I eat my carbs in fruits and veggies and try not to have breads or whatnot. UGH. This not eating carbs thing though is HARD STUFF! Because all fruits and veggies give you carbs and if you have to watch your total carb load (like I do!) you HAVE to count those as well. However, I've noticed that a protein based diet really causes me to gain weight. So, I'm going to drop my protein back down and keep on keeping on with my veggies and some fruit. I hope this helps you some. If not, shoot me a message and I'll do what I can to help.

There is a huge difference between simple carbs and complex carbs in my book. If my carbs are a little bit high because of fruit and whole-grains, that's not an issue as far as I'm concerned.

One thing to keep in mind (and you probably already know this) is that a calorie is a calorie -- it is fuel for your body. Carbs and protein have the same amount of calories per gram with fat having more than double the amount of calories. With that said, all of the calories themselves are just energy at the end of the day.

I'm sure your oats, banana, and honey is a decent amount of carbs, but they're all good carbs (the oats and banana, at least).

I am eating too many carbs these daze too! My overage has been in fruit but now that the Farmer's Market is over I think I can get off that kick. I signed up for that 30 day food fix or something-that is sponsored by Green Giant vegetables. It had a great chart. I'll try to find the article and send you the link. I eat eggs. I think the oaties are a great breakfast but know they have a lot of carbs. I cut out most carbs that come from grains so oaties were out. I miss them. I don't miss the bread though. Was never much of a bread eater. If you want to keep your oaties try cutting out the bread at Subway. My Subway offers all the same selections as a salad...so it's the same ingredients without the bread. See if that will help satisfy lowering carbs for you??? I hard boil a dozen eggs at a time and then can add them to salads, or just peel and eat and sometimes I'll peel 3 or 4 and make deviled eggs. There are several low carb teams and you can look through some of their suggestions and they have some great ones. I got lots of good information from them. I just had to cut back on teams and quit a few, not because they weren't good, it was just cutting into my fitness time to belong to so many teams. Hope some of this was helpful!
