Never say never...My 1st Half Marathon

Plano Balloon Festival Half Marathon - 9/22/13

The morning was perfect. The temperature was cool and the skies were clear.

As we were getting ready to start our race, the hot air balloons were also getting ready to take off.

My sweet husband was there helping me gear up and giving me last minute encouragement.

All the miles, the pre-dawn runs, running through the little aches and pains--now the moment was finally here!

There is nothing like lining up with all the other runners. I could FEEL the excitement! Then the buzzer sounded, and off we went....

As we rounded the first corner, the hot air balloons were flying right over our heads. It was breathtaking! I found a comfortable pace and just kept chugging along...mile after mile...with the help of some great tunes, it all went by pretty quickly.

By the time I realized it, I was at mile 10 and I still felt great! Only 3 more miles to go. I started to speed up and caught up to and passed a few of the people who I had been running with throughout the race.

When I got to the last mile, it didn't even feel like I was controlling my legs, they were just going on their own. As I got to the last 100 yards or so, I saw my niece and my step brother. They were cheering me on, then my nephew and my sister-in-law. They gave me high fives, and I found myself sprinting to the finish line.

It felt awesome!

Who knows how many more half-marathons I will do, but this one will always be special to me. Completing a feat that I NEVER thought was even possible in my life.

Last year, I was 42 and almost 300 lbs. I got winded going up a few stairs.
Last Sunday, I ran for 13.1 miles!

Like I said before...NEVER SAY NEVER! emoticon

I walked my first 1/2 marathon a couple of years ago. I plan to do at least one next year.

Be proud of yourself. That is a big accomplishment.

Well done Marisa! I eyes teared up a little as you described your approach to the finish line. Fantastic! I don't know if I could ever do a half, but you inspire me to actually sign up for a 5K. (I've ran 5k in my neighborhood, but I want to experience the whole race atmosphere)
