Sommerberg - riding with the sun to kicks off my day

Thursday, September 26, 2013

This morning I companied my wife to the train station (06:50 am), and as I was on my bike, I decided to do a little bike touring in some new directions.

This is because since I wrote here, that route (WZ11) is not new anymore, I did that a couple of times already, once even with my wife.

I fired up the bicycle map on my mobile phone, and looked up a route that I haven't cycled yet, called R21.

It started well, but then. I see why I never went in the direction before. It was a continuous uphill for 30 minutes! Good for me, extra training. My bike has only 8 gears (hub gear), so the hills are often a problem. But somehow, I get more and more training, and I can climb up more hills.

The landscape was not particularly beautiful in that area, but I just realized that the sun came up at 06:50 am, too, so I was following the whole sunrise. I have seen all the colours, clouds, fog, hills during the whole ride.

Thank back at home, it felt so easy to start with my creative working. I think I'll do this more often! :-)

My take away today?
If a destination is called 'Sommerberg', I better be suspicious about the altitude (literally "summermountain"...

How often do you try new routes for your running/walking/cycling?
How do you choose new routes - just by impulse, or you look it up ahead?
Any tips, suggestions?

Have a great day full of exercise and keep on sparking!

Good for you for trying yet another route, although you didn't realise it would be such a challenge! I try new routes/paths most weekends, as I only very rarely go on the same hike twice. I need the change of scenery.

I tend to take little side trips on a whim. I usually expand my range in little added loops here and there and gradually expand my range but about once a month I'll check out the local map and see if there is anything interesting. I've tried looking for new routes on Mapmyride.com but find that most of those routes are by more hard core bikers. Still, they give me ideas for new routes.

A little bit of both...I love maps, but I also like the sense of adventure of taking detours or exploring. Sounds like a great way to start the day!
