Don't Shop When You are About to Drop

Very interesting article in the Lakeland Ledger today. (Could not find a link, but it was a paragraph on the front page.) Recent research in Sweden showed that grocery shoppers who had not had a good night's sleep bought more caloric foods than those who were well rested. We've always heard not to shop when you are hungry, but guess we better add not to shop when you are tired!

Healing report: forehead is completely healed, tip of nose almost, bridge of nose is still black, chin's scab is smaller, as are the scabs on both knees and both hands. I ran today with no problem -- just don't look so good. I'm still icing my left hand as it continues to be sore when I try to pick up things, twist knobs, etc. I just found out that one of my runner friends who is just a few years younger than I ran a 5:15 full marathon this week with her daughter and husband in Ohio. Last year she had two falls, one week apart. She didn't quit. Neither will I.

    Sorry to hear of your injuries, but I am glad that you are healing well. I have difficulty grocery shopping. When I am hungry or tired, I can only imagine that it would be that much harder. Thanks for the tip. emoticon emoticon

    I know I buy more junk when I'm tired. I really have to watch when I'm going to shop. Evenings are not a good time for me to do that.

Glad your injuries are healing. I walked 20 miles in a Walk for the Heroes a week and a half about with no problems. And we started at night and walked along a highway. I had a little flashlight. But the next day I walked around the block and tripped on a curb and skinned my knee up and hurt both my hands pretty badly when I landed on them. No cuts on them but the outsides of the palms on both hands below the little finger hurt all the way to the wrist and got pretty swollen for a few days. That was a week ago last Sunday. They are still a little painful at times, and tender to touch. But they are getting better. But any type of exercise that puts weight on them right now I can't do. I'm in a group where the challenge for this week involved burpees. Totally out for me right now. If we are going to be active, we are going to have those falls or other injuries once in a while. Hope you heal up quickly and glad you are able to run again now.

    I am fully aware of how my insomnia leads to bad eating choices and simply eating to stay awake when I need to (really can't stand the thought of coffee or pop) It for sure influences shopping patterns. I always try to shop after I have eaten though. Never go to the grocery store hungry was one of the earliest tips I learned from Spark people.
So glad you are healing nicely! My bridge mentor has taken some serious falls, breaking minor bones in her hands and just turning her face black and blue, but she will always walk back and forth to the club (she is about 76 I think) and has had a double knee replacement like me. But unlike me she did not recover as well and shuffles quite a bit. Amazing as she walks quite far to get to the club.
Never give up indeed. You are a shining star of that!!

    That's the whole HALT thing: never let yourself get too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired if you're fighting a compulsion/addiction. No great wonder the research showed tired people more likely to go after high-calorie foods!

    Again, grateful that your injuries were not more severe. Falling is definitely a skill! When I was a climber, we practiced ice axe arrest on just about every climb. Wish recovering from a fall while running was as easy but I'm guessing it has something to do with tuck and roll. And how would you practice?

    I know that's true; I'm definitely more likely to pick up a "treat" when I'm tired. The old "eat something and you'll feel better" kicks in. Never works, but I still fall for it--because I'm tired! Glad you are healing well.

    I have learned that my biggest struggle is making good food choices when I am tired. First of all, it triggers me to want to eat more and secondly I tend to eat sugary "junk" - CHOCOLATE!!! I can only imagine if I were shopping without a list during that time! I'm dangerous without a list in the best of circumstances! One more reason to make sleep a priority! emoticon

    You certainly came through your fall better than I did. I have a separated shoulder from a fall back in Dec, 2009 and then my broken arm from the fall last August 1. Still running, however.

Thank you for the info on shopping. I eat more when I'm hungry so it makes sense to buy more food. Sleep is essential!
