Lessons Learned About Eating on Vacation

This is an interesting trip because everyone is quite fit, which isn't surprising since it is a 4-day hiking trip! But it's not like taking a cruise, or a trip where you sit on a bus most of the time.

I would say that I'm the most overweight woman here. TC may disagree, but probably only because he's kind!

Our group is interesting: there are 14 of us; there are two married couples, two men whose wives didn't come, a single man, a mother/daughter combo, and the rest are single women.

We eat all meals together so I've had a chance to observe -- and be restricted by -- the habits of others!

Lesson #1: Thin Women Eat Slowly. I've worked hard to adapt that during my trip, and know I need to work harder to adapt it into my eating at home.

Lesson #2: Thin Women Make Good Choices. Chicken, not beef; vegetables, not meat; fruit, not cake. (gah)

Lesson #3: Eat Only What You Want. Some women skip the appetizers even when healthy choices are available; many skip dessert or opt for tea. Most do not feel pressured to eat just because everyone else is. Peru is a meat-eating country, and we have one vegetarian who has been subsisting nearly completely on fruit!

Lesson #4: Thin Women Don't Clean Their Plates. This is hard for me, since I was always taught NEVER to waste food! It seems especially shameful to leave food in a Third World Country where many people do not have enough to eat. But almost none of these women eat everything they are served.

So how am I doing?

I never gauge well on vacation because I don't know how things are prepared and I don't engage in as much intentional exercise as I do at home. But I have to be honest: the habits of others are definitely impacting WHAT and HOW MUCH I eat.

I am thinking a lot about how and what I eat vs. how and what "they" eat. I'll be with this group for another week; maybe some of their excellent habits will rub off on me by then! I hope so!!

    Interesting observations. I was taught to never let food go to waste that is tough for me too.

I know you are burning major calories with all that hiking.

    Half the trick is to think like a thin person. I eat what I fancy, including cake, but only if I'm hungry, and as soon as I start to feel full the rest goes in the bin. Eating slowly gives your brain time to hear the 'full' signal. Funnily enough I just put an almost identical comment on someone else's blog, to explain how to give up tracking!

    It's so very rare to be in a group of thin people: terrific to observe and take notes!! One thing I remind myself of often: thin people experience hunger, every day, and without panic. Not an emergency. Just a signal that the next meal, when it's time, will be more enjoyable (particularly if eaten slowly!!)

    What interesting observations! Eating more slowly has been something I've been concentrating on for some time. It definitely doesn't come naturally to me.

    Wow what a pleasant surprise... I didn't expect to hear from you until your return.

Just remember that everyone has differing needs. What those women do, may be what they need to do for their health, what is it that you need to do for yours. Plus what you observe, may not be the whole story. This wonderful trip will be both taxing and exhilarating, just do what you need to do to keep yourself healthy.
Have I said that I am a tad envious of you and your adventures, Thank you for sharing and letting me live vicariously through you.

BTW what are you going to do at Machu Picchu, another plank? :)

    Wow. What an adventure. I would imagine all that hiking is burning off quite a few calories. This is the type of vacation my husband would like, as he is not one for sitting a lot.
