1) priceless, invaluable,
2) highly esteemed for some spiritual, non-material, or moral quality: precious memories. (taken from Random House Dictionary)
I have been studying gratitude for some time now, and lately I have been reading a book titled "Attitudes of Gratitude: How to Give and Receive Joy Everyday of Your Life" by M.J. Ryan. Today I was thinking about what I consider to be precious in my life for which I can give thanks and show gratitude.
This is a short list of what I consider to be precious:
#1 My relationship with God
#2 My family members
#3 My friends
#4 My relationships (Is this the same as #2 and #3?)
#5 My life (my breath, my body, my mind, my spirit, my abilities, my talents, my struggles)
#6 People in general, whether or not I know them personally; life
#7 This moment; This day (I have no guarantee of the next moment or tomorrow)
#8 Earth: it’s plants, animals, sea creatures, land, water, and atmosphere
As I meditate on this list, I ask myself, “How can I show the world that I consider these to be precious to me?” The first thing that comes to mind is to be mindful and respectful of them, and to spend time taking care of them. So how can I “take care of” them? I think it would mean a) to spend time with them, b) to give them the best I have to offer, c) to give gifts that show I care, d) to write uplifting and encouraging letters of gratitude for and/or to them. What if I even did this for the earth, the animals, this moment or day, as well as to people I don’t personally know? What if I began a Gratitude Journal and wrote 10 things in it each day, or took pictures of what I am grateful for on a daily basis? And what if I began to use all my abilities and talents every day to show my gratitude for all these priceless gifts in my life?
How would my life change, and how much more difference would my life make here on earth?
I suppose the next step is going to be to make and inventory of my talents and abilities so that I can know what I have to work with each day and to begin to figure out which talents and abilities fit each person on my list. Perhaps though it is better to keep that list private and to end this blog now.
What do YOU consider to be priceless in your life?
