Flexibility

Friday, September 20, 2013

Can you touch your toes? I bet you can, but I can't! However, I'm believing that I will be able to at some point. Sometimes, when I come back from a walk, I bend over and relax, it's the only way I can get some relief from my back pain. The more I relax, the nearer I get, but frankly I'm never fully relaxed whilst doing it. It's just too painful. It's the pain that stops me.

But that doesn't mean that I'm not 'flexible'! You see, today we had a plan (doesn't every day?) Business this morning, then a walk into town after lunch for visits to post office and library, shopping and a couple of other things. Is that how it turned out?

Of course not!

Unexpectedly I had a visit from a neighbour. She lives over the road, and we often chat and occasionally get together for a meal. This weekend she has her little grand-daughter staying. She wants to take her to our Nature Reserve, but...... doesn't want to get lost! So, could I take her round and show her the way? DH and I chatted, yes, we could reverse our plans, so that's what happened!

Flexibility! But.... read on....what a surprise!

I took her the 'quick' route. It's easy and straightforward. I knew that she wouldn't get lost once she knew this way. It usually takes me just under an hour. We walked around, chatting, and taking a few photographs - but we walked all the time. I could tell that it wasn't at my usual pace, but had no idea how fast we were walking. I deliberately didn't look at the time, preferring to wait until the end. I was also aware that she was walking at her optimum speed.

Guess what?

IT TOOK US 40 MINUTES LONGER!

I have to say that I was very pleased. It shows how much more fit than I was just a few short months ago. I'm sure that Sue is more fit than I was then........

So, a few pictures just to amuse you.

Glad I don't need an operation. I've heard of field hospitals, but.......

This is the best I can do with a picture of Sue,

We were looking at the ducks, but can you see the swan in the background? It's the one I photographed the other day.

I think I told you that the rangers have been doing a lot of clearing and management. This has been cleared since Wednesday

So it's a new view!

This afternoon I walked into town with hubby. We went at a reasonable pace, sorted our business in record time and walked back, pausing only to grab him a coffee on the way. I didn't need one, because, let's face it - I can't go anywhere now without my water emoticon

So, the moral is - stay flexible!

Onwards and Upwards!

Good job, you're getting there and before long you may be touching your toes too. Hope your back pain eases as you lose weight. I keep hoping mine will but for now I just take ibuprofen when I need to and try to keep moving.

Thanks for stopping by my blog with encouraging words. emoticon

What a great Blog! I actually can't touch my toes and don't think I have been able to since I was like 12. Might have to be a new goal here soon -- or something to work towards.

You inspired me to try and yes I can touch my toes... but then I usud to be able to put the palm of my hands against the floor when I was younger. Some trainer once told me that I am "overfelxible" not necessarily a good thing.

Love to read about your progress ! emoticon

Funny you should write about this today. I was just thinking about something someone said to me over 40 years ago...."The two words you need to succeed in life are 'Be Flexible'"!
I have done stretching exercises for many years. I can still do "the splits". But that is not what he meant. He meant that if you can't be fluid enough to go with the flow, you will be broken. There are always changes in the course of the river and you must be flexible enough to adjust to the changes.

So many chuckles in this Blog!! Sounds like you and your friend had an amble instead of a walk!! As for touching toes, I haven't been able to do that with straight knees since I was 12. Have a wonderful weekend!
