My First Race: The Rugged Maniac (pics)

At approximately 9:59am on Saturday, September 14, 2013, I stood near the starting gate with dozens of other people in preparation for the Rugged Maniac 5k Obstacle Course Race. The race starter came on the PA. system and said, "One minute until race time!" At that moment I closed my eyes and looked at the sun. I took a second to let the whole thing wash over me. I took a second to let this whole journey wash over me. I took a second to think about how far I had come from starting at 509lbs! I thought about all the Insanity, P90x, and yoga workouts I had done. I thought about all the time I spent in the kitchen preparing good food so I wouldn't eat the junk that I did for so many years. It was truly one of the most calming feelings I have ever felt in my life! When I opened my eyes, I felt like I could do anything! I was ready!

What lie ahead of me was a 5k obstacle course in Paoli, Indiana at a ski resort called Paoli Peeks. It was to be 20 obstacles that would twist and turn, up and down the large hills of the ski resort. But with that calming I had right before the race, it occurred to me that I had already done the hard part. I had already lost 215lbs and no obstacle course was going to intimidate me!

I will say one more thing about the race before I get to the pictures. There was a point about 2/3 of the way through the race where I had just crawled through and was completely covered by mud. My shoes weighed three times what they started at and I was dripping wet from wading through water on the obstacle before. I was hot. I was tired. But I picked myself up and out of that mud and started running! It was slightly up hill but I just started running and I was passing people who were too tired and had to walk. I'm not so sure that in that moment, that I have ever felt more alive in my life! I had this moment of clarity that I really can't describe! I thought that this is where my journey had brought me! All the hard months and hard work for this feeling right here and now...IT WAS ALL WORTH IT!

My inspiration tape. WWHD (What Would Holly Do for @Hollys_New_Life) who has encouraged me through many ups and downs in this journey. And WWBD (What Would Brad Do) for myself to not forget that I AM doing this!

Finished!

I'd like to thank my good friend Tiffany (@DAUGHTEROFTWIN) for coming along with her friends Caroline & Amy and taking all of the pictures!

As for the race, it was amazing! It was hard but so much fun! In total it took me 1 hour and 13 minutes including waiting in line at an obstacle or two and helping people over a couple of things when needed. I am proud to say that I did complete all of the obstacles as well! I can not wait to do more races like it in the future! Maybe even some more that are bigger and better! After just one race into my "racing career" and I may already be addicted!
