"BLACK TOENAILS ARE SEXY." OK! Maybe when they are attached to someone else. I hate my own and they generate sympathy from Judith, but I don't think they contribute to our passion.

Toe blisters are are my number one de-motivator. I'll run whether its frying or frigid. I'll run when I'm sore, and I'll run when I'm tired. I've stupidly run with all the common injuries that plague amateur runners. But I won't run with raw toes unless I'm already in the middle of a workout when I get them.

Since I started running semi seriously in January of 2012, I've lost several toenails. I started with size ten-and-a-half shoes, got a lot of toe blisters and moved up to elevens. I've been wearing eleven-and-a halfs for most of this year and think I need to go up to twelves to stave off the blisters, but these shoes will be too large and may interfere with my already tortoise skewed performance.

I'm running in the Empire State Marathon on October 20th and I've been logging 35-45 miles per week most of the summer. But those miles are slow because any real effort tears up my toes. Suggestions are welcome. Should I get clown shoes? My dress shoes are ten-and-a-halfs.

    I found going up 1 size and getting my shoes in a wide width helped me tremendously. Also, bodyglide is a blessing. Good luck!

    Been there, done that...still have the black toenails even though I rarely run...but every year when I get ready for the Binghamton Bridge Run 5K here come the black toenails...lol!

    Between running and folk dance, I lose several toenails every few months. I just live with it.

    I had black toenails twice, both times the same toe, and both times I suspected misplaced socks. Vaseline is good ,treatment and prevention.
But your case may be totally different than mine, as you do longer distances.
I hope you'll find a solution soon, and you can run your next Marathon free of blisters and with all your toenails on at the end.

Take care with too big shoes!
Shoes should fit you comfortable without being too big in any direction.
It size feels good but shoe is still uncomfortable, buying a bigger size may be a bad idea - I did that last summer and ended up with sore foot arches and had to give away the shoes : (

    You know, TOO BIG of shoes can cause blisters, too - if you're jostling around a lot it can be more rubbing. You been using a lot of bodyglide? Trying different socks? I'd try those things before going up to a 12... most people only go up .5-1 shoe size from their "regular" shoe size. So for you the top size would be 11.5. I run 1 size up. I tend to get blisters on my pinky toes. IF I use a lot of bodyglide I usually avoid them pretty well... Plus I run in shoes that have a little bit of a wider toe box so my toes have more room without sizing up too big in the rest of the shoe.

    Do you have a running shoe store to consult? My local running shoe store has "shoe nerds" who are awesome at diagnosing fit issues and recommending solutions...either inserts like superfeet or shoe size or type. They are runners too, so they can relate to the problems and concerns we have...

Hope you can find a solution, your problem sounds painful!
