What did halfback Fred Gehrke add to the helmets of his Los Angeles Rams teammates in 1948 that started a trend in pro football?

He put a team logo on them. Gehrke, an industrial design artist in the off-season, painted the team’s brown leather helmets dark blue and then decorated them with yellow ram horns.
