I go to a fairly new church, Oct will be our third anniversary. And our pastor is a wonderful nut that thinks outside the box to help out our community.
Every summer we have a motorcycle run, half the money raised goes to help the youth go to camp the other half goes to a house for trouble teens.
Our first year we did a school backpack drive. The church provided nylon bags, and then we stuff them with school supplies - enough of every grade in a local elementary school. I think it was around 500 of them.
Last year we did a couple of small things .... canned food for our local food bank and a christmas toy drive.
This year we teamed up with Generosity feeds .
We packed 10,550 meals for our community!! In under 2 hours!!! Our goal was 10,000. But I guess we really wanted to prove something so we did an extra 550!
We did this at a garden center that also host parties so they have a big open area. It was scheduled from 4 to 6. But some setup was needed. And because my family likes to help and do, so got there at 1:30. We had to move a lot of plants and set up tables and all of the food stuff, and get stuff ready. So we got there at 1:30 ..... and left at 7 .... 8?. ( ... church's first service is at 9 am, guess who was there? haha)
I know that sounds like a very long day, but the hours just flew by. It was wonderful!!
I think every single person that has ever been to Journey Church showed up to help! Today we are all sore and tired. I have blisters on my feet, garlic powder up my nose ... but I ..... we, are so ready to do it again!! And from the post on my facebook ... So is my church family!
Can you image feeding 10,000 kids in your community???? !!!!!TEN THOUSAND!!!.
Not sure if our nutty pastor realized the impact this would have. ... It made the front page of our newspaper AND one of our biggest radio station was giving us a shout out.
AND we, Journey church, are now landowners!!!! YAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!! Which is good, cause we are close to hitting 400 weekly attendanees! .... I think half are babies! LOL!!! Oh and guess what kind of building we are going to have. ..... A TENT!!! HAHA! It's actually called a Clearspan building. Which fits us perfectly. So can't wait. Right now we rent/share a building that also is a big jumper business that has the jumpers set up inside a building for childrens parties. So every week we deflate the jumpers and set up our equipment. Then after church we pack up our equipment and reflate the jumpers. .... A lot of work.
This will be something that we will be talking about for years. So very blessed to have been a part of it. I feel like I didn't do a lot, but hubby has pointed out just how much I did do, but still. Thinking about it brings tears to my eyes. Again, feeling very blessed.
I hope that you get the opportunity to do something like this for your community. It will be life changing for you and you will not regret the aches and pains afterwards.
