My Legendary Salad

Monday, September 16, 2013

For most of us the New Year begins in January. For me, it's always been September. Today, September 16th is my birthday. And even though I've been back in the classroom for almost a full month, I always think of September as the beginning of the school year. This time because BLC-23 begins so soon, I have even more of a "beginning of the year" feeling.

I will be a BLC Captain and that august position inspires me to write that I want to be a good example to everyone on the team. I want to put in my very best when it comes to the challenges and I want to be as scrupulous about my diet as possible. It's been a stagnant year for me.

Being a Captain is a little daunting. I stepped up to do it because I love the BLC. It was the first "sub-group" on Spark People that I joined and I saw its beauty and effectiveness right away. If you give your determination and all your heart up to the BLC you will become healthier. I personally LOVE the challenges. I love the idea of knowing that each week, for the next 12 weeks, I will have delineated things to do for myself that really promote health, nutrition, exercise and (one hopes) weight loss.

This year: I swear to try my hardest. I don't expect perfection but every day can be a new beginning. This is the first year in FOREVER that I'm not wanting to go out for a caloric meal at a Public Eating House. My husband, who looks like a cross between Harry Truman and Bryan Cranston, is making one of his LEGENDARY Salads. The first time he threw together some greens and strawberries with a bit of pungent onion and some pistachios, I told his that his salad was already LEGENDARY.

I am grateful that my dinner will be a LEGENDARY salad. I am grateful that I don't feel a compulsion to eat something enormous. I am grateful that my dessert will be apple slices. I am grateful that my five beloved cats are with me--although two of them have gone totally blind in the past year. We age together, the cats and me.

It all feels good enough and festive enough for me!

What a lovely, happy, encouraging, rejoicing thing to read. Thank you so much for sharing - and I hope the festivity and gratitude multiply all thru the BLC. You will be a great captain!

    Happy Birthday SEASON!!

I love the Legendary Salad. The last salad that we had included green onion, figs, apple, and bell pepper mixed in with the greens. I have an olive oil and balsamic dressing that I make, and we add a little to our individual salads.

After my food today, I need to really watch it tomorrow. I had fruit and a Fiber One bar for breakfast, then half of my mexican food for lunch and the other half for dinner. Blew it, but it was great!!

    Happy belated birthday!!

This is the part of your blog I like best...
"I am grateful that my dinner will be a LEGENDARY salad. I am grateful that I don't feel a compulsion to eat something enormous. I am grateful that my dessert will be apple slices."

When I am out in public eating my lunch (as in, at a craft sale) or eating my own food that I prepared and brought with me on a weekend away, I look around me at the strangers or family or friends around me are eating and feel the exact same way. Grateful that I am NOT eating what they are and grateful that I brought nourishing, nutrient rich, delicious REAL foods!

Many Happy, and Healthy, Returns of the Day to you. I can see why you named the salad Legendary - it looks wonderful. BLC23 will be my first foray into this challenge and I've already found the training useful.

Hooray for new beginnings... that is one good looking salad! Congrats on being a BLC Captain this round. That is a big commitment and you sound ready to take it on. I need to get myself in gear and come up with some manageable goals and a plan so I can drop 5 pesky pounds. That idea doesn't seem so tough but the reality is another story.

Happy Birthday!

Wow, strawberries and pistachios and no cooking! Sounds emoticon !!!

Thanks so much for being a BLC23 captain. It's my first BLC and I'm impressed by the organization and work of the team. Really, really looking forward to taking it to a higher level.

It's a new year for me, too. Yom Kippur was on Saturday, perfect timing to strive for a better year.

That salad looks yummy! And good for you, too.

Funny -- I was just telling one of my friends at the beginning of September how this month felt as much like the New Year for me as January 1.

Best wishes for a very Happy Birthday!
