Eating Healthy on a Shoestring Budget

Sunday, September 15, 2013

Dry oats were $.04 cents an ounce making this oatmeal 16 cents (cooked with water) + $.05 for flaxseed, $.05 for almonds, $.01 for cardamom seed, $.10 for organic lactose-free milk, and $.50 for melon = $.87 cents.

Worked 16 hours yesterday until 12:45 AM - non stop - doing Fall cleaning before I leave on my week long wilderness adventure out on a ocean campout, and then went to bed very physically wound-up from working in the house/yard. I awoke not tired, after 6 hours sleep, and had a hot bowl of old fashioned oats (soaked over night with cardamom seed) by 7 :15 AM. That $1.99 melon I bought last week was huge, and provided many bowls of fruit. Today is the last of it. Topped with almonds & ground flaxseed, the oatmeal will provide energy through out the morning as I work even harder to get everything done before Monday morning.

Looks delicious. Now that summer is over, I am going to start making my steel cut oats for breakfast.
