Went for a hike Saturday. A pretty long hike, considering the hiker mix.
There were me (the eldest hiker, at a month short of 67), two of my sisters, two of my nieces, one of my nephews, my grandson (the youngest hiker, at 4-and-a-half), three great-nephews, a great-niece, and a step-great-nephew. We hiked through a provincial park--approximately 12 km in 4 hours or so--not a stunning pace unless you're a four-year-old!
Needless to say, the "Littles"-- my grandson and two of his cousins about a year older--couldn't walk the whole distance and so had to be piggy-backed. I shoulder-carried and piggy-backed my grandson about a third of the time. Did you know there's no "Hike and carry 4-yr-old" listed as a monitor-able exercise on SparkPeople???? Needless to say I figure I burned a swack of calories!
Did you know there's no bonding quite like carrying a child up-hill and down, step after step after plodding step? That outweighs calorie-monitoring to an immeasurable degree : )
Quite apart from the great exercise, it was a wonderful time. While we were having our picnic lunch, my sister, whose job is mediating families in crisis, remarked that we are singularly blessed as a family, to have the experience of so many siblings with so many of their descendants being together in a happy family activity. She is so right in that observation!
In my bedtime prayers, I give hearty and humble thanks for the blessing of family. Amen and Amen and Amen!
