Do It Afraid

This morning when I was doing my workout DVD, I was really struggling with some of the moves, and I had to do some modifications. In the past, I would feel bad about myself if I had to modify a workout. I would think that if I wasn't keeping up EXACTLY with the workout instructor on the DVD, then I was a failure and I might as well just give up.

I gave up on myself so many times. Sometimes I'd give up before I even started. I would think "I can't do that...so why should I even try?" Or I would think "I have so much weight to lose...its going to take forever...I might as well just forget about it."

Mostly, I was just afraid of how hard I'd have to work in order to change my life and start moving towards my goals.

But then I read this quote from Joyce Meyer;
"Just because you feel fear doesn't mean you can't do it. Do it afraid."

I was afraid, but I got started anyway. It wasn't easy, and it still isn't. Although I've lost 71 lbs so far, I still have more weight to lose. And even though I workout every day, there are still things I can't do, and there are still moves that I have to modify. But then again, there so many things that I CAN do that I wasn't able to do before, and sometimes it just amazes me! I think "wow, I'm really doing this...52 years old, still overweight, bad knees...but I am doing this workout!"

If you're afraid to start, then do it afraid! You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to keep up with people who are younger than you, or people who are already in better shape than you. You only need to compete with yourself. Put forth YOUR best effort, and just take it one day at a time. Give yourself time to get better, stronger and braver. You are so worth the effort!

There are 110 days left until New Years Day. Imagine the progress you can make in that time! The days will go by no matter what you are doing, so why not make the best off that time?

    emoticon I understand your challenges. Modify, modify, modify. When something is too hard I march in place until the next doable part. I use the pause button and rest when needed. It takes me longer to get the workout done, but eventually I do.

    emoticon blog! When I started Sparkspeople I started out walking 5 mins. at a time, made my way up to 90 mins. Then 7 weeks ago I got sick and get short of breath very easy, have not been able to go for my walks because of this. The doctors think that they have the answer now. I have to wait a few days for the meds to kick in. But I am going to start walking again on Sunday. I have to take it slow, so here I go all over again. 5 mins at a time. But you no what that quote you shared with us all is going to stay in my head and help me go every step. Thank you so much for sharing.
emoticon to you and keep up the emoticon job! emoticon Cathe

  Really enjoy your blogs.....glad I subscribed to them. Joyce Meyer, I never would of thought of quoting her......I used to watch her all the time. I think what you wrote is very true. Alot of folks fail because of their fear......"Fear of Failure". Fear of not being able to do it as well as someone else or fear of how long it will take to lose that weight so they just give up. Do it in fear but just do it!!! Thanks for writing.......great inspirational words.

    This is such a difficult concept to embrace. I know exactly what you are talking about. In my yoga class I am most likely the oldest person there and although I feel my hips grind and moan with some of the moves and my balance is less than optimal I still feel the need to "keep up" with everyone else. Sometimes when I'm in a pose my muscles are quivering so much I don't know how I manage to stay upright!

So thanks for the blog to let me know that there is someone out there that thinks it is o.k. to not do the exercise/pose perfectly emoticon

  Thank you! I wish more exercise videos would have practical people. The one I did yesterday, the woman had very sculpted abs. My 8 year old saw that and said gross. (Luckily about her and not my flab). Human nature makes you want to compete, but as I was doing half of what that woman was doing, all I could think was, at least I'm doing something! Thanks for sharing.
