Do It Afraid

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Thursday, September 12, 2013

This morning when I was doing my workout DVD, I was really struggling with some of the moves, and I had to do some modifications. In the past, I would feel bad about myself if I had to modify a workout. I would think that if I wasn't keeping up EXACTLY with the workout instructor on the DVD, then I was a failure and I might as well just give up.

I gave up on myself so many times. Sometimes I'd give up before I even started. I would think "I can't do that...so why should I even try?" Or I would think "I have so much weight to lose...its going to take forever...I might as well just forget about it."

Mostly, I was just afraid of how hard I'd have to work in order to change my life and start moving towards my goals.

But then I read this quote from Joyce Meyer;
"Just because you feel fear doesn't mean you can't do it. Do it afraid."

I was afraid, but I got started anyway. It wasn't easy, and it still isn't. Although I've lost 71 lbs so far, I still have more weight to lose. And even though I workout every day, there are still things I can't do, and there are still moves that I have to modify. But then again, there so many things that I CAN do that I wasn't able to do before, and sometimes it just amazes me! I think "wow, I'm really doing this...52 years old, still overweight, bad knees...but I am doing this workout!"

If you're afraid to start, then do it afraid! You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to keep up with people who are younger than you, or people who are already in better shape than you. You only need to compete with yourself. Put forth YOUR best effort, and just take it one day at a time. Give yourself time to get better, stronger and braver. You are so worth the effort!

There are 110 days left until New Years Day. Imagine the progress you can make in that time! The days will go by no matter what you are doing, so why not make the best off that time?

  You sound like me! that stupid perfectionism gets in the way. I like the way you turn it around with positive thinking. Not easy to do but in the end is more gratifying. Good blog

    Anything we can do to help ourselves get healthier is better than doing nothing at all. We don't have to be perfect, or exact, or flawless...................just willing and motivated.

Thanks for the inspiration.

    Well fellow sparkpeople: Lets get out our calendars and stickers and see if we can make everyday from now to Christmas a red letter day. Should be a great incentive to be our best before 2014.
Thanks again Pixie for another reminder if we want something badly enough, we can make it happen. emoticon

    I know exactly what you mean! I have a kettlebell workout dvd with 4 young ladies doing the workout, and here I am, 59 years old and 60 pounds overweight and really unable to keep up at all! So of course I gave up on it. After reading your blog though, I think I'm going to try that dvd again - and do it at my own pace! Was going to wait until I was closer to my goal, but why wait? I'm going to DO IT AFRAID and at my own pace! Thanks for the inspiration, Pixie!!

    Loved your blog...been busy with life lately...but like you stated 110 days will go by if I am busy or not. Getting back on the bandwagon today. Spent the past month getting rid of my ex-husband's things...to good-will, etc and the kids are back in school. Have not taken time for me...& if I don't put myself first, no one else will:) Do It Afraid is a great sermon also by Joyce Meyer...used to be a motto of mine back in the day. Loved seeing it this morning. Thanks and blessings emoticon

    So true. Didn't have enough time for my regular swim last night, thanks to transit snarlups, so instead I remembered when I started I could only do 15 minutes of a slow breast stroke...Decided to do the entire 20 minutes with my newly acquired crawl stroke and managed it. Flopping like a clumsy mammal and breathing hard, but doing it. Couldn't do 1 complete lap of the crawl 6 weeks ago, so a reminder of progress, even when I'm feeling unmotivated, as I have this last week...

    Do it afraid. I like that. I used to believe I had to do everything perfectly. I've gotten better, but sometimes I still find myself getting frustrated because I'm not doing it "right." I have to remember to be flexible. What are we so afraid of anyway?
