So one of our Team 55+ assignments today was to watch a video of a Huggies commercial which showed a toddler with a happy attitude, no matter what went wrong in his day. Of course, the point of the commercial was that his soft diapers made all the difference. The second part of our assignment was to blog about how attitude helps or hurts my plan.
I truly believe attitude is of tremendous importance not only to making lifestyle changes, but also to how we handle the stress in our lives. Having a positive attitude even when dealing with negative people, helps reduce my tension and so my stress level. This is not easy. And I don't always accomplish it, but I'm trying to incorporate it more and more into my daily life.
As far as my plans for a healthier lifestyle, attitude makes a big difference for me. My attitude this time is "I'm doing this because it makes me feel better and it is what I want to do."
Notice, not what I have to do. Not because I want to lose xlbs before a wedding, or family get-together or vacation, but because I want to feel better and be healthier.
I'm also not looking at it as something with an end date. I'm making changes I can live with happily for the rest of my life.
And because I'm feeling better, have more energy and am happier doing this, it is spilling over into the rest of my life helping me to cope with the stresses we all face daily.
One thing I have tried because of a SP article I read on smiling, is to smile at myself every time I look in a mirror. I tried it as a kind of experiment not really expecting anything. Imagine my surprise when I started feeling much better about myself not to mention happier. I've even found it spilling over to seeing pictures of myself. My old attitude was "I look horrible, I don't want to see myself." Now even though I still see the excess weight, my first feelings are happiness remembering the occasion where the picture was taken and pride in the changes I've made.
I believe if I keep this positive attitude no matter what setbacks I face, I will succeed. And so will you.
"Smile and the world smiles with you" is a phrase from an old song and by golly, it is true.
